Did Danny and Baez find the real murderer?

That was their plan on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 5, when they found out that a single mother was murdered and all signs pointed to her abusive ex-husband.

Meanwhile, Frank had to deal with the fallout when Mayor Dutton thought it was a good idea to abolish solitary confinement in prisons.

Also, Jamie found herself in trouble when her efforts to save a young woman from an overdose caused severe consequences.

Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 6 Review: Brushed Off

Nothing about Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 6 felt quite right, as the Reagans explored their flaws, and some were more serious than others.

We'll start with Erin and how she helped convict the wrong man nine years ago.

Wrongfully Convicted - Blue Bloods

Of course, Erin went full force in court while trying to convict Norm because she honestly believed that he was guilty. His accuser lied on the stand and swore he'd beaten her.

It must have seemed like an open and shut case. It took Erin less than a day to present her case, and it took the jury less than an hour to convict.

Poor, naive, Norm was a fool not to hire an attorney.

Did Erin's divorce play a role in her fervor to convict him? Perhaps, and I was proud of her for considering the possibility.

Danny: What's happening to us?
Erin: Turns out we may have flaws.
Danny: Speak for yourself.

The part I didn't understand was when Norm's accuser, Tina, told Erin, "Thank you for doing what I couldn't do."

What was that exactly? Erin figured out that Tina was lying after the man had spent nine years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, all because Tina wouldn't come forward with the truth.

I couldn't believe that Erin left Tina in a room alone with Norm and his wife.

Tina destroyed Norm's life. He was convicted of a felony, spent nine years in prison, and destroyed his career. Even with the conviction vacated, nothing will erase those memories.

I certainly wouldn't have blamed Norm or Beth if they wanted to do Tina bodily harm after putting them through such hell.

Now we move on to Danny, who definitely had his ups and down.

On the upside, Danny was having open and honest conversations with his son, and he didn't even flinch when Shawn asked why Danny was alive, given his dangerous job, but Linda was dead.

He even followed protocol and hung back until SWAT cleared the building, much to Baez's shock. However, it's a little sad to think that it took Linda dying for Danny to contemplate how his actions might affect his ability to make it home to his family.

Danny: You were right. I've been all screwed up in the head lately and it's put me on the back foot, and I should have told you but I didn't, so I'm sorry.
Baez: Do you want to talk about it?
Danny: I'm pretty sure I just did talk about it.
Baez: I guess a few drops of blood from a stone is progress.

But then he blew up in interrogation with hardly any provocation, and then he basically bribed a pharmacy employee for information he needed a warrant to obtain.

Not only was that unethical, all Darla needs is for her attorney to figure that out and this whole case could get shut down.

Also, I know that Darla was upset and angry, but she went through a lot of trouble to kill Rollin when she could have gone to an attorney and filed a paternity suit. If Evan was Rollin's child, she and her son could have gotten quite a bit of child support.

Instead, Darla's going to jail, the grandmother is terminally ill, and poor Evan will probably end up in foster care.

Arch Bishop Kern Visits Frank - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 6

Frank got another visit from Arch Bishop Kern, and whenever this guy shows up, he makes my skin crawl.

You can always tell when the Arch Bishop wants something because he's either overly complimentary or takes the hard line to make Frank feel like he has to comply to be a good Catholic.

In this case, he laid it on really thick by making a quip about kissing Frank's ring. Even Frank rolled his eyes at that.

Trudy: Now I paint the New York that I miss. The one where the loft we're in wasn't the price of a mansion.
Frank: I miss that New York too.

Yes, New York City has changed over the years. Some much for the better, like the lower crime rates, and some for the worse, like how most people making normal salaries can't afford to live there any longer.

As badly as I felt for Trudy Slaughter losing her home and art studio, she got off easy. She could have seriously hurt or killed someone by throwing those paint cans from three stories up.

I would have been okay if she had to do real community service and paid for the damage to the police vehicle, but Frank having her paint his portrait because he'd had a crush on her for decades bordered on unethical. I was surprised that the only pushback he received was a little ribbing at Sunday family dinner.

He even strong-armed the Arch Bishop into giving her the $1 million payout.

Arch Bishop Kern: That shipped has sailed.
Frank: Call it back to the dock.

It could have been interesting to see Frank date Trudy in later episodes, but I'd guess that ship has sailed. It could really blow up in Frank's face if it came out that he pulled those strings for her and then they ended up in a relationship.

Frank and The Artist - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 6

But I did love the portrait of Frank in uniform. I wouldn't mind seeing that again.

On the upside, we may have had Frank upset with the mayor, but at least she was off screen, and we didn't have to endure yet another confrontation between the two.

On the downside, Jamie and Eddie were mostly background players once again.

So what did you think TV Fanatics? Did Frank go too far to help Trudy? Should Erin have figured out Norm was innocent sooner? And will Danny's erratic behavior derail a case?

Did Frank have to pull the plug on an eviction Jamie and Eddie were working on?

That became a concern on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 6 when Archbishop Kearns appeared with some big concerns.

Meanwhile, a famous basketball player was found dead of an apparent drug overdose, and two team members looked to a case from the past to see what really happened.

Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 7 Review: Common Ground

Change is slow.

Sometimes painfully so, as we watched on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 7.

I'm sure Danny Reagan wishes his life hadn't changed. Certainly, his kids wish it hadn't.

Protecting a Nurse - Blue Bloods

I was proud of Danny for not overreacting to Sean's outburst. This kid is angry at the world because his mother is dead and that's to be expected.

Danny is just the closest and easiest target for that anger.

The similarities between Danny and Faith were almost over the top. She was a nurse whose husband, a cop, had died. Danny's a cop whose wife, a nurse, passed away.

But Danny is nowhere near ready to move on with anybody, and I'm sure it will be a long time before he gets to that point.

Danny: It's weird, but I still feel like I'm married, you know?
Faith: I did too, for a long time.
Danny: When does it stop, feeling like you're married?
Faith: When you decide it's okay to start living again.

Right now Danny is doing what he needs to do, which is concentrate on his boys and his job.

I was a little surprised that Faith called Danny when Raymond was ramming her car on the West Side Highway.

Personally, I thought calling 911 made more sense considering I can't remember the last time I went down that highway more than ten blocks without seeing a patrol car, but I'll admit that's being picky.

Danny and Faith - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 7

And how many hours does Danny spend at the shooting range? I can't imagine every cop, or even a majority, could make that shot from that distance.

I felt sorry for Faith. I wonder if she'll ever date anyone ever again.

It also feels like the family has the same conversation at Sunday dinner over and over again, wherein Danny complains about the District Attorney's office not doing enough to take criminals off the streets and Erin points out that they need actual evidence to file charges.

Or maybe I just miss Linda. I find Nicky a poor substitute sitting in that chair.

Frank's story had me a little bewildered, mostly because the parts of the plot I was most interested in went nowhere.

If I have this straight, the guards at Riker's Island wouldn't allow Teresa Hill to have visitors because she was accusing one of them of murdering a fellow inmate.

Frank quickly uncovered the mysterious absence of security footage from that day, that the guard in question had been accused of sexual assault twice and the prison never even bothered to investigate the charge.

Hearing all of that, it's hard to dispute Shelly's accusations of collusion, cover-up, and corruption.

As much as I didn't agree with Shelly losing her cool at the prison and getting herself arrested, I found it even more disturbing that she could end up in that same prison for up to two years awaiting trial if she couldn't make bail.

What are the odds she'd end up as another dead inmate before she ever made it to trial?

Frank walked a line between wanting to do the right thing and being self-righteous.

Just you standing up there and saying the system isn't perfect and some folks get screwed by it, that would be like Christmas morning to us.

Shelly
The Mayor's Policies - Blue Bloods

Also, what was up with Garrett's ire at Frank deciding to see Shelly on his own?

I understand that there are protocols for such things, and Frank circling them can be frustrating, but Garrett being so vocal about his indignation felt a little over the line.

Frank is his boss. If he wants to invite someone to his office, I don't think he needs to ask permission.

The worst part of this entire story was that we never did find out what happened to that dead inmate, the guard accused of murder and sexual assault, or Teresa Hill.

The most interesting parts of this plot were off screen, which was disappointing.

Finally, we get to Jamie and Eddie, whose dynamic remains unchanged.

Eddie: Did you see the look on her face? She fell in love the second she saw that baby, it was instantaneous. I just thought, some day I want to experience what that feels like.
Jamie: Me too.

Well, Jamie and Eddie may not be talking about their potential for a future romantic relationship, but at least they know where the other stands on having children thanks to this Blue Bloods quote

I had to laugh at Eddie when Jamie prepared to help deliver the baby, and he told him no as if he could stop that from happening.

I was torn over Jamie making the call about the house being unsafe. Obviously, the landlord was taking advantage of immigrants with no voice, but moving to a homeless shelter with a newborn was equally scary.

Working security a couple of weekends in the Hamptons hardly sounded like a hardship to get this family someplace safe.

And I loved that they named the baby Eddie due to the name mix up. Jamie may have delivered their son, but he's also the one who facilitated them losing their home. Eddie's the one who got them a new one, and a job too!

So what do you think TV Fanatics? Did Jamie do the right thing? Do you think Danny will ever move on after Linda? And was I the only one who wanted to know more about the story on Riker's Island?

Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 8 Review: Pick Your Poison

Controversy abounded on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 8, and as usual, the Reagan family spent their time trying to stop it, make sense of it, or pick up the pieces.

Danny and Baez's case was possibly the least controversial but also, in some ways, the scariest.

Moving On - Blue Bloods

Dwayne Pitney was a sick, twisted, horrible human being who deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

As far as racists go, Dwayne was loud and stupid and easy to spot, but Kyle Wentworth was possibly more dangerous.

Kyle was smart enough to attempt to thinly hide his real beliefs and dress them up as a "righteous force" of protection instead of a racist mob.

It made me all the happier when Danny called it out for what it was in this Blue Blood quote...

Danny: Cause when I see a bunch of look-a-like, dress-a-like, dirt bags carrying pipes and bats and sticks and such, I see a gang.
Kyle: We're a force for good.
Danny: No, you're everything you claim to hate only you're too stupid to see it.

When Tyrell walked into the precinct, I wasn't sure if Danny had the correct response, but at the same time, I wasn't sure what the right response would have been.

In essence, this was two rival gangs looking to control territory, only one of the gang members was a former cop.

What's the limit of what the shield shields you from?

Baez

After ten years on the force, Kyle walked away. I wish we'd heard a little more about that, like what his record was on the force.

Either way, there was no question how this story was going to end. With neither side willing to back down, I don't know how many cops it would have taken to prevent more dead bodies from piling up on the sidewalk.

Elsewhere, Eddie ran into a guy from her college days and arrested him.

It wasn't difficult to dislike Skip with him standing there holding his tennis racket and shrugging his shoulders as a police officer called for his aid.

But hearing Eddie's story about what happened to her in that frat house was sickening. That Skip watched, most likely cheered, took pictures and posted them for all to see, was nauseating.

Eddie Files Charges - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 8

I could understand why Eddie didn't feel comfortable sharing that story with her partner; it was humiliating, through no fault of her own.

And I couldn't really blame Eddie for wanting to get her little piece of revenge.

Was it the right thing to do? No, but it did feel a little bit like karma.

Of course, Jamie Reagan always does the right thing.

I could understand Jamie going to the Desk Sergeant to have the charges reduced because he feared repercussions for his partner, but Jamie should have sat Eddie down in private and explained that to her.

Bringing Erin along to a public place to act as his back up and tell Eddie after the fact felt like an ambush or a betrayal.

Jamie's way may have been the right way, but I get why Eddie's not going to forgive him right away. Jamie just added another tiny wound to a trauma she's been holding on to for a decade.

Although, I'll admit that giving Skip that nudge to his already broken ribs was probably unnecessary.

Now on to Frank and his pot-loving police chief.

The Mayor's Policies - Blue Bloods

I thought that Chief Jones' argument that the marijuana he ingested was during a trip to Colorado, where the drug is legal, gave him a way to fight being fired.

What bothered me was his attitude.

It is still illegal in the NYPD, all city agencies, and under state and federal law. I can't just look the other way, Devon, because you decided a Rocky Mountain High is okay.

Frank

As Sid pointed out, you can't ask the rank and file to follow and enforce a law you aren't willing to follow yourself.

Any uniformed officer probably would have lost their job; the only reason the Chief had the chance to argue his case was because of his rank.

And 19 years on the force and the rank of Chief seemed like a lot to throw away to smoke some pot on the weekends, but that's just me.

The mayor's involvement in this made me groan. The more we see of Mayor Dutton, the less I like her.

If she wants to make marijuana legal, that's done on a state level, but using an internal NYPD personnel matter to push her cause had a bad smell to it.

And could you imagine some of the headlines and questions if she had hired Devon? Will the new Deputy Chief of Emergency Management be high during our next emergency?

As uncomfortable as the meeting with the mayor was, and as much as I cringe whenever she's on screen, I did love Frank's deadpan response to her...

Mayor Dutton: What's the course of action?
Frank: A period of suspension.
Mayor Dutton: Define period.
Frank: A length or portion of time.

However, I did miss a real Sunday Reagan family dinner. A conversation about Henry getting high taking place over Chinese takeout just didn't measure up.

Did Frank vote with his head or his heart?

That was the big question on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 8 when he was hesitant whether to taint the spotless record of a member of the force who tested positive for marijuana.

Meanwhile, Eddie found herself thinking about the past when she arrested someone she hated from college on charges that could have been made up.

Did she investigate to find out the truth?

Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9 Review: Pain Killers

Remember when I complained about Frank Reagan always doing battle with the mayor's office?

Well, Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9 changed things up...sort of.

Now Frank was doing battle with the governor, and this looked like it could get nasty.

Working Together - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9

First off, was I the only one who found the governor's voice and mannerisms to be cringe worthy? Every time the man was on the screen he made my skin crawl.

For that reason alone I hope he never returns, but I truly doubt I'll be that lucky.

Previously I had thought there wouldn't be another elected official that annoyed me more than Mayor Dutton. And I hate that she's always half an hour late for everything. That's just rude and disrespectful, especially for someone in a position to demand respect from other.

Where Mayor Dutton appears to be an idealist with not enough experience for the position, the governor comes across as an arrogant bully, more concerned with furthering his career than actually serving the people he was elected to represent.

Frank: You don't get to be the arsonist and the fire fighter.
Governor: What's that mean?
Frank: It means you don't get a big thank you for cleaning up a mess you made.

I couldn't believe that the governor had his State Troopers pull over a van because it had "foreigners" inside. If that's the new standard he's going to have to have every other vehicle in New York City pulled over.

Part of me wanted to hear Frank say to just fire him already and get it over with, but I suppose the show is over once Frank steps down.

Carlton Works Both Sides - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9

There were a couple of upsides to this story. One was that Mayor Dutton wasn't on screen, although the governor turned out to be far worse, and the other was watching Frank and Garrett work with Carlton to try and find a work around...

Carlton: I work for the mayor.
Frank: Me too. Here we are, just a couple of worker bees shooting the breeze.

In the end, the worker bees won the battle, but certainly not the war. Unfortunately there is little doubt that the governor will be back to seek his revenge.

Elsewhere, Baez nearly died from a Fetanyl overdose just from coming in contact with the stuff.

How much scarier does a drug need to get before people stop using it? But I suppose part of being addicted is that all sense and reason goes out the window in search of the next high.

Accidental Overdose - Blue Bloods

It was hard to come up with any tears of Nigel Lawson's death, after he was such an elitist brat even after his best friend ended up dead.

And the doctor's haughty attitude and inability to admit that over prescribing opioids is at least a part of the overall problem was disheartening.

But the best moment came when Danny admitted how much Baez means to him, even if she was unconscious when he said it.

I probably don't say it enough but you're one hell of a cop and you're one hell of a partner. I really, really need you to wake up. I really can't afford to lose you too.

Danny

It was also good to see Danny attempt to give Mr. Stratton a second chance. I'm not sure that the Danny Reagan of two or three years ago would have done that.

Mr. Stratton Gets a Second Chance - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9

Then there was Kenneth Tripp, the newest sex offender on the block.

I was torn over this story.

Kenneth Tripp served his sentence and had the right to live his life, but people also have the right to feel safe.

As much as I wouldn't want a convicted sex offender any where near my family, perhaps it's better to know who and where they are and be able to take precautions.

Better the devil you know than one hiding in plain sight that you might miss.

Because the unfortunate truth is that predators are out there, and we need to take precautions in order to keep ourselves safe.

I didn't agree with Ruiz beating Tripp unconscious, but I could understand Erin not being willing to press charges. The odds of a jury finding in favor of a child sex offender were pretty slim.

The entire case made for one of the most interesting Reagan Sunday family dinners we've had in a while.

Erin saw things from the perspective of the law. Danny saw things from the protective parent's point of view, and Jamie was torn.

But even Frank had to admit he'd do the wrong thing for the right reason, and then pay the consequences...

Nicky: So, given no choice, would you put the welfare of your family above the law?
Frank: Yes, I would.
Danny: Thank you.
Frank: But when the dust settled I would walk down to the local precinct and turn my self in because nobody's above the law, and without the law, nobody is safe.

Drug overdoses, despotic politicians, and child sex offenders made for one serious episode of Blue Bloods.

Which was probably why I was so grateful for this humorous Blue Bloods quote...

Look, I already have a fantasy football team, okay. It's called the Jets and every year I fantasize they're not going to suck.

Jamie

So TV Fanatics, did you despise the governor as much as I did, and how would you handle living next door to someone like Kenneth Tripp?

The members of the Reagan family attempted to lend a hand to those they felt were in need on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 10, but did they all make the right decisions?

The ones who got it right were Jamie and Eddie, with an assist from Erin.

Hostage Situation - Blue Bloods

It was hard not to feel for Parker Mack. He helped save a woman from a predator holding her hostage and inadvertently also saved two more women being held in that basement.

My big complaint about this story was that they never specified why the man was holding these woman in the first place.

Was it sex trafficking? Was he a serial killer? Or just some violent psychopath who woke up one day and decided to abduct women and hold them in his basement?

They never really explained, as though we're supposed to think that it's New York City and these things are just to be expected on occasion.

But back to Parker. It appeared he was a decent guy who hung out with the wrong crowd in college and ended up with a warrant for stealing a car. Lucky for him, Eddie had a soft spot for him.

Eddie: I know you, and I know you can come up with something.
Jamie: I'm not some kind of criminal justice magical genie.

The scene where Jamie dropped his request on Erin and then ran so she couldn't say no was adorable. We usually don't get that kind of playfulness between the siblings, especially not during business hours.

When Erin said that the DA in Bucks County wouldn't budge on the charges because it was an election year, it only made sense that Jamie would find a way to get the story to the press. I'm sure the local papers were thrilled to cover a story with that much drama.

Taunting a Suspect - Blue Bloods

Speaking of drama, Danny was pretty hard on Alonzo. I understand that the justice system can't do very much if witnesses aren't willing to come forward, but the truth was that Alonzo didn't see their faces.

I don't blame him. A pack of animals like that knows where I live I wouldn't be talking either.

Baez

It felt natural for Danny to criticize, but this guy was on crutches and had no way of protecting himself or his family from Lugo and his gang of thugs.

The story did leave me with a few questions, such as: would the precinct have really let in the donut guy? And is it smart to eat food sent by mobsters?

Also, why was Baez so worried about lying to their suspects?

Detectives lie all the time to coerce confessions. That's just part of the job. It feels as though the show subtly makes Baez less of a detective at times as a means of boosting up Danny, and that bugs me.

Finally, why would Victor Lugo go after Alonzo when he knew that the man never saw his face because he wore the ski mask the entire time?

Either it was a plot hole or Victor was just that dumb.

Victor Lugo Shows Off - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 10

I'm willing to go with Victor was just that dumb.

On the upside, the Aston Martin was hot. I almost felt sorry about Danny eating the donut in it -- one with sprinkles no less.

Finally, we had Abigail's transfer which started off with a conversation that turned out to be one of my favorite Blue Bloods quotes...

Abigail: What do you think I should do?
Garrett: Go back in time and not tell us about it.
Abigail: I promise I will not tell him that we spoke about this.
Sid: Actually you won't have to, he'll just know.
Abigail: Not if you don't tell him.
Garrett: He'll just know in that way that he just knows stuff.

Frank has a certain spidey sense when it comes to his people, and it was tingling when it came to Baker.

I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to be a trained detective and sit behind that desk for so long. I'm sure it has its perks too, or else Abigail wouldn't have kept the job for nine years, but I could understand her feeling the need to get back in the game.

It was one thing to lose Baker to a Captain who respected her talents, but when Bowman threw her under the bus to cover his own ass and save face with the Commissioner, I was livid for her.

It certainly put Frank in a tight spot, although I don't necessarily agree with how he handled it.

Was it really better to let Baker think he was blocking her transfer for his own selfish reasons? Couldn't he have asked her to reconsider or offered to look at ways for her to find more job satisfaction?

Frank is quick to fall on his sword instead of bringing down his own people, and it's hard not to respect that.

That said, I was thrilled when Baker dusted herself off and went into detective mode to figure out what was going on, and then confronted Frank with the information.

Detective Abigail Baker can be just as straightforward as her boss, and I thought their compromise of having them both consider the case closed was a sound one.

Best of all, we get to keep Baker at 1PP. Frank's team would undoubtedly suffer without her.

Blue Bloods Midseason Report Card: Baffling Development, Frustrating Trend & More

$

There's no doubt that Blue Bloods is about the law and the Reagan family and how they are unquestionably intertwined, but as Blue Bloods Season 8 began, it shocked fans with the loss of a beloved family member.

Did that shake up have an upside? Are the additions of another new mayor and the governor energizing the series or bringing it down?

With ten episodes behind us, we're taking a hard look and assessing what's working, what's not, the best episodes, worst new characters, and what we'd like to see during the second have of Blue Bloods Season 8.

Is the Reagan family and their colleagues still making the grade? Read on to find out...And you can always watch Blue Bloods online here at TV Fanatic.

1. Most Shocking Plot Twist: Linda Reagan Died

Amy carlson letter
There are certain things you expect from a Reagan Sunday family dinner.

The saying of grace, intelligent conversation, a good debate, a bit of family squabbling, and Linda Reagan holding the family together.

Now that’s changed. Linda’s unexpected, off screen, death during the season hiatus means nothing will ever be the same.

The biggest shock was how we never, ever saw it coming.

2. Best New Development: Danny Reagan Steps Up

Protecting a nurse blue bloods
Danny's conversation with another grieving father says it better than we can...

Danny: Finding myself making breakfasts and lunches and talking about emotions are things I never really had to do as a father.

David: I can't picture you in an apron.

Danny: I can't cook a TV dinner, but in many ways it's been the best opportunity of my life. An opportunity that I might not have taken, probably wouldn't have stepped up for if not…

We do like this more serious, thoughtful side of Danny. He can't just rely on Linda anymore to keep him grounded and keep the family together. It's all on him now.

However, we did expect to see more of Linda and Danny's sons, because they're currently mostly around just to fill chairs and make quips at family dinners. After Linda's death, we're expecting more from them too.

3. Development That's Left Us Baffled: Too Many Unanswered Questions

Not leah harris blue bloods s8e2
It began with the very first episode of the season where Jamie and Eddie went undercover for all of a minute to investigate a drug dealer for six dead teenagers…and gave us very few answers.

It continued in episode 2 when a girl who had been missing for 13 years supposedly showed up on her mother’s doorstep, but no one asked where she had been all that time. And then we never really found out how her “brother” was able to pay her off, why he’d want his “sister” back or even why he killed her in the first place.

We know that time is limited but Blue Bloods season 8 has given us far too many stories with huge plot holes and unanswered questions. Fans deserve better.

4. Character We'd Like to See More: Jamie Reagan

Right where he wants to be blue bloods s7e15
Jamie Reagan has been painfully absent from many episodes so far this season... and a brief line at the family dinner table isn’t cutting it.

We realize the show has a large cast and there are only so many minutes per episode, but Danny and Frank monopolize most of that time, with Erin running a close second.

That leaves fans with Jamie withdrawals far too often and that needs to change quick!

5. Character We'd Like To See Less: Mayor Dutton

Mayor maggie dutton blue bloods s8e1
She’s rash, naive, impulsive and doesn’t appear to listen to anyone’s advice.

We’ve watched Frank butt heads with previous mayors, but there is something about Mayor Maggie Dutton that really gets under our skin.

We know that Frank has to have some dealings with the mayor, but in this case, a little goes a long, long way.

6. Best Guest Star: Whoopi Goldberg as Regina Thomas

Avoiding a veto blue bloods
Tom Selleck and Whoopi Goldberg have wonderful chemistry, so when their characters debate back and forth, it comes off naturally.

It’s even better when both Frank and Regina have points of view that make sense but don’t necessarily line up with one another.

Will Regina Thomas eventually be the city mayor on Blue Bloods? We certainly wouldn’t mind one bit.

22 Times TV Made Us Grin From Ear to Ear

Despite some writer's best desire to drive viewers to tears, sometimes watching TV makes us so happy we can't stop grinning.

We've rounded up some of our favorite, most grinnable moments of 2017 in the gallery below.

Yes, grinnable. You may now feel free to use it about the world!

1. Mark Linn-Baker as the Mayor's assistant on Blue Bloods

Mark linn baker as the mayors assistant on blue bloods
I LOVED Perfect Strangers when I was a kid. It was one of the first shows I was obsessed with. So it's really nice to see one of the stars on a semi-regular basis again 30 years later.

2. Stevie inheriting the motel on Schitt's Creek

Stevie inheriting the motel on schitts creek
Stevie is a gem of a character who felt like she was running the motel, but wondered what she would do long-term. That's when her great-aunt passed away and left the motel all to her, and she joined forces with Johnny to help fix it up and make it a success. It resulted in some of the shows funniest scenes ever.

3. Joe coming full circle on the series finale of Halt and Catch Fire

Joe coming full circle on the series finale of halt and catch fi
When it was revealed where Joe had gone after Gordon's death, and the camera slowly panned around his office where he now took up residence as a professor and it held all the things he held most dear, I smiled so great my heart grew three sizes. Not only was it a retrospective of the best that was Halt and Catch Fire, it proved to all the non-believers how far Joe had progressed through the seasons. And he stood before a classroom of students as he did in the premiere saying the same words once again, as a completely different man, "Let me start by asking you a question." Amazing.

4. Mike Franks's comments from the peanut gallery on NCIS

Mike frankss comments from the peanut gallery on ncis
In an episode where the team pondered the existence of ghosts, one might expect the reasonably-grounded NCIS to come down on the position that ghosts don't actually exist. Hilariously, the apparition of Mike Franks (in a delightful cameo by Muse Watson) also stopped by to offer his opinion on the topic to Gibbs at the end of NCIS Season 15 Episode 8.

5. The synergetic timing of The Orville and Discovery

The synergetic timing of the orville and discovery
There are those who think that the freshman Seth MacFarlane-led series The Orville is more Star Trek than the esteemed franchise's latest offering, Discovery. The Orville presents a dramedy that contrasts distinctly with the darker, more morally ambiguous serialized war story of Discovery.

However, it's clear from the rather energetic discussions and forum threads that many viewers actually watch *both* series; the fact that Discovery and The Orville both premiered around the same time provided an unexpected opportunity for an even more unexpected synergy between the two series, despite their obvious differences. It's a good time to be a fan of sci-fi.

6. Matt and Jessica's relationship on The Defenders

Matt and jessicas relationship on the defenders
The relationship between Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones during The Defenders had me smiling from beginning to end. It's a pairing for the ages. Their humor matches one another and their begrudging respect for one another was reminiscent of two siblings who occasionally bicker but always have one another's backs when it counts. They made The Defenders a worthwhile watch.

13 TV Characters Who Need Some Extra TLC on New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is a time for celebration, but some TV characters would rather avoid the parties and hide under the covers.

No bubbly for them, please. Instead, they'd like a big fat hug so let's give them one, shall we?

1. Kevin Pearson - This Is Us

Kevin pearson this is us
It could be said that the happiest-seeming people are sometimes the most broken inside. They just do a good job of hiding it. Success has always fallen into Kevin's lap, but it's also taunted him. His football career was destroyed by a bad fall and that same injury came back to haunt him when he was right in the thick of filming a dream role. He destroyed his relationship with Sophie but began a new romance with prescription painkillers. It's true that he's cocky and arrogant, but all that does is hide a pain he's hidden away for years.

Whose heart didn't break when he completely fell apart at his high school football field and later on Charlotte's front lawn? Yet, when he went to Randall's house to seek some help, he had to put his issues aside because of Kate's miscarriage. There's not much more Kevin can take. While booze is off the table this New Year's Eve, hugs and an open ear aren't. A listening party is the best kind of party Kevin could ever hope to receive.

2. Joyce Byers - Stranger Things

Joyce byers stranger things
Life was getting back to normal for Joyce and her family after her horrible experiences the year before. She even found love with Bob Newby, and she was happy. Everything wasn't perfect, but it was getting better! Then her life turned into a living nightmare again when she watched Bob get torn apart by the Demogorgons. Joyce has no interest in celebrations. She just needs some extra TLC this New Year's Eve!

3. President Kirkman - Designated Survivor

President kirkman designated survivor
Nothing has been easy for Tom Kirkman since he took office, but he's pulled through time and time again. Much of his success was due to the support of Alex who stood by his side through thick and thin. Life won't be the same for President Kirkman going forward after Alex's death in a horrible car crash. Losing a spouse is difficult, and Kirkman is going to need all the TLC the American people can give him!

4. Elizabeth Keen - The Blacklist

Elizabeth keen the blacklist
We still can't believe Tom Keen is gone. We'd like 10 bottles of bubbly to make that bad memory go away, but this isn't about us, it's about Lizzie. Although she and Tom had rough times, their love for each other was undeniable. What is most devastating for her is how great her year started out. Remember all the fun she had dancing with Reddington at the motel's pool? Liz is a fighter and a survivor, but she's going to need lots of hugs to get her through this New Year's Eve.

5. Danny Reagan - Blue Bloods

Danny reagan blue bloods
Danny has always been an emotional kind of guy and not in the best sense of the word. Linda has always been there to keep him steady, but her shocking death turned his life upside down. Although the audience never saw the horrific helicopter crash that killed her or the immediate aftermath (and we're still angry about that huge blindside!), Danny is having a hard time with it all which isn't surprising for anyone in these types of circumstances. While we might not ever be able to soothe his wounds, we can at least give him some extra TLC this New Year's Eve and let him know he'll never truly be alone.

6. Shadow Moon - American Gods

Shadow moon american gods
Effed up is even the right word to describe Shadow Moon's year. He got out of jail early only to find out his dead wife was having an affair with his dead best friend. If that wasn't enough, he meets a guy who turns out to be a god and flips his life around for no understandable reason. Shadow is a tough guy, but even this is too much for a guy like him. What he needs is a night away from all the craziness Mr. Wednesday has brought into his life. No amount of booze will make it go away completely, but it may make it all a bit more tolerable.

We're back with some powerful moments from the year that that really packed a punch.

Surprising scenes, exciting news, and even a shirtless reveal that moved one dad to the top of Riverdale's finest.

Find out what we're talking about when you scroll through the gallery below!

1. Enjoying Henry and not Cinderella on Once Upon a Time

Enjoying henry and not cinderella on once upon a time
How much I like older Henry. Or really, the reboot of Once Upon a Time. I have read so much terrible reviews about this season but I think it is refreshing. I was never a fan of young Henry so you can imagine my surprise when I thought old Henry was actually attractive. I fully expected a season without Emma Swan to be a complete waste but it has actually been quite a fun departure from Storybrooke. Seeing all the actors portray new characters was also awesome. The only downside is Henry’s love interest Cinderella. Not only is she a complete whiner, there is no chemistry between them. I would gladly see him falling for Drizella and turning her good!

2. Earth-X Prometheus is Tommy Merlyn

Earth x prometheus is tommy merlyn
While it might make total sense from an in-universe perspective, the reveal of Earth-X's Prometheus as that world's Tommy Merlyn during the Crisis on Earth-X four part crossover event took me off-guard in a good way. Colin Donnell is a regular on Chicago Med, which is filmed quite a ways from the Vancouver studios of the Arrowverse. Even though he only appeared for a couple minutes, he still made an impact and elicited quite the emotional response from Oliver, who got to witness his best friend die again. (And that's not even remotely the most messed up thing Ollie ended up doing in the crossover, either!)

3. Linda Reagan dies between seasons

Linda reagan dies between seasons
The Reagan family on Blue Bloods has endured more than its share of grief, to be certain, with the latest example coming in the tragic death of Danny's wife Linda after her actress decided to leave the role after seven seasons. While we wish Amy Carlson all the best, and killing her character was quite possibly the most understandable way to write her out, it still came as something of a surprise that Linda died off-screen between the seasons.

4. American Gods sex scenes

American gods sex scenes
American Gods has impressive cinematography, but nothing prepared me for their sex scenes. How does someone portray a goddess consuming someone with her hoo-ha? Well, American Gods nailed it. They also had one of the most psychedelic, intimate gay sex scenes, and sadly, it surprised me that it was portrayed so beautifully.

5. JJ Shooting Theo on Days of Our Lives

Jj shooting theo on days of our lives
I was expecting to hate this whole JJ shooting Theo storyline on Days of Our Lives. I'd gotten used to JJ getting garbage writing designed to manipulate viewers into hating the character (which obviously didn't work in my case). But this story is well done and allows viewers to make up their own minds and JJ is actually sympathetic!

6. Death of Security Chief Landry on Star Trek: Discovery

Death of security chief landry on star trek discovery
ST: Disco has been a wealth of surprises in its first half-season. Breaking with established Trek form, it's been a dark and unpredictable war-time narrative focused on a main character with no rank within Starfleet. Of the many unexpected twists, killing off Commander Landry, an established senior crew member of the title ship in what was really the second episode (since the two-hour premiere was more of a prologue) was the first sign that no one (except maybe Burnham) is safe in this new Trek. The fact that she died provoking a giant space bug she'd named "Ripper" was really only surprising for its level of dumb.

17 TV Cop Partnerships For the Ages

$

0

Joe Friday made television history by focusing on the facts when investigating crimes.

But for most viewers, the facts -- and sometimes even the case of the hour -- are not as entertaining as the relationships between cops.

Whether played for laughs or part of a serious crime drama, cop partnerships are central to almost every crime drama.

Check out our picks for the 17 best partnerships and share your own.

1. The Andy Griffith Show: Andy Taylor and Barney Fife

The andy griffith show andy taylor and barney fife
Andy Taylor and Barney Fife were one of the funniest, and best known, cop partnerships of the early 1960s. Andy was the straight-laced, serious sheriff trying to raise his son to be an upstanding citizen, while Barney was goofy, silly, and accident-prone. This duo was so popular that ANdy Griffith and Don Knotts teamed up again seeral times during the course of Griffith's later lawyer-turned-detective show, Matlock.

2. Dragnet 1967: Joe Friday & Bill Gannon

Dragnet 1967 joe friday and bill gannon
No cop partnership list is complete without Dragnet's Joe Friday and Bill Gannon! Crime dramas owe a ton to Jack Webb, whose no-nonsense, workaholic Joe Friday solved cases by the book and ushered in the idea of cops as detectives rather than superheroes. Harry Morgan's Bill Gannon provided comedic relief and a human touch, as Gannon often tried to involve Friday in his latest hobby or his family life.

3. Starsky & Hutch: David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson

Starsky and hutch david starsky and kenneth hutchinson
Starsky & Hutch was another one of those shows that threw two polar opposite cops at each other to solve crimes and have each other's backs. While some of the action and dialogue might seem dated or silly today, at the time this partnership was controversial because the two men expressed brotherly affection for one another, which was taboo in the 1970s.

4. Cagney and Lacey: Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey

Cagney and lacey christine cagney and mary beth lacey
Cagney and Lacey was the first cop show to feature two women in the main roles, and their ability to do a tough job, struggle with family issues, and lean on each other won viewers' hearts despite disapproval from 1980s network executives, who were unhappy with them being less stereotypical women.

5. Days of Our Lives: Abe Carver and Roman Brady

Days of our lives abe carver and roman brady
Modern Days of Our Lives viewers are used to incompetent or corrupt cops and know Abe Carver as the mayor of Salem and Roman Brady as the ex-police commissioner who now runs the Brady Pub. But back in the day, Abe and Roman were a sharp, smart crime-fighting duo who became the close friends we see today. As a bonus, James Reynolds' Abe Carver is one of the longest-running African American characters on TV and is often a positive role model who values integrity and honesty in police work.

6. Homicide: Life on the Streets: Tim Bayliss and Frank Pembleton

Homicide life on the streets tim bayliss and frank pembleton
1999's Homicide: Life on the Streets was known for its gritty realism and outstanding cast. Among the best cop duos were Kyle Secor's Tim Bayliss and Andre Braugher's Frank Pembleton. Over the course of 7 years, Bayliss grew from the nervous newbie to an out-and-proud bisexual and seasoned cop, and Pembleton softened a little -- but not too much -- after his zeal for justice caused him to suffer a stroke. The two constanly toed the line between friendship and getting on each other's nerves but had each other's backs when it counted, making them one of the most endearing cop duos in history.

Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 11 Review: Second Chances

$

Frank Reagan is many things but two descriptors that top the list are stoic and in control.

But that wasn't the case on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 11

Frank Speaks Out - Blue Bloods

Watching a video of yourself saying something you've never said, and likely never would, is certainly jarring, but not nearly as terrorizing as what Garrett went through when he and his wife were SWAT'd.

Frank was quick to criticize Garrett for not bouncing back quickly enough after that incident, yet Frank himself had difficulty finding his equilibrium after watching that video.

At least he had the good grace to admit his shortcomings to himself and Erin in this Blue Bloods quote...

Erin: Are you okay?
Frank: Actually I'm being a big baby about it. I know it, but I can't seem to shake it.

I really enjoyed the way Sid stepped up to rein Frank in when he was taking things a step too far.

I understood why Frank wanted to look Colin Taylor in the eye after what he'd done, but showing up when they actually made the arrest would have been quite the spectacle.

Sid: Boss, can I say one thing? The idea of you being at the arrest, I think it sends the wrong signal. We've got murderers, rapists, arsonists, all kinds of bad guys.
Frank: And I don't show up at any of those collars.
Sid: Exactly.

When Frank was asked to come to Sid's office I immediately knew something was up because no one but the mayor summons the police commissioner to their office.

But when Frank walked in it all made sense. Sid was giving Frank his due by letting him talk face to face with Colin without prying eyes.

After being so adamantly against the District Attorney's new directive on drug prosecutions, it was both surprising and encouraging to hear Frank voice the concern of most thoughtful individuals about the state of our society...

Frank: I've heard one side called fascist and cruel, the other called fairy tales for snowflakes. Neither is true. The middle ground has gone missing.
Erin: How do you get it back?
Frank: I don't know.

Too Late For a Second Chance - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 11

Locking all drug users in prison may just be causing more problems for everyone down the road, but there are certainly no easy answers. Investigating better alternatives seems not only smart, but necessary.

Erin was faced with the hard reality of some of those consequences.

Should Dr. Lee McBurn have spent time in prison for his crime? Perhaps, but it only made a bad situation worse.

Part of that problem is that the prison system appears to be filled with drug abuse, which is a separate issue that needs to be addressed.

But even once Lee became a heroin addict in prison and was then released, he went through rehab four times, to no avail.  The failure of the rehabilitation system is yet another problem in this complicated mess.

Even though Lee's son, Bryan, decided to try and help his father in the end, one of my favorite moments was when Anthony tried to get Erin to see the foley in continuing to track Lee down...

Erin: How can you say I'm wasting resources?
Anthony: Because you're looking for a guy who doesn't want to be found for his son who doesn't care about finding him. Pretty much defines wasting resources.

Erin needs someone like Anthony who knows when to give it to her straight. Plus, his deadpan retorts usually make me laugh.

Wasting Resources - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 11

Finally we get to Danny, and Baez was spot on in her assessment of his conversation with Jessica...

The minute she said she was looking into an old case of yours, she became the enemy.

Baez

I couldn't really blame Danny for not investigating the original crime to the fullest extent, considering Ethan gave a full confession.

My gripe was that even when Jessica said her life had been threatened, Danny didn't seem to care. It took Baez to coerce him to ask more questions.

After Danny and Baez went to meet with Ethan Goodwin, it because clear he was covering for someone, and my first guess was his daughter. The only person someone willingly goes to prison to cover for is their child.

And if the daughter hadn't been stupid enough to kidnap Jessica, odds are that nothing would have come from her documentary about Ethan.

Instead Ethan spent years in prison and his daughter ended up dead. Overall, it was a pretty sad story.

My one nit to pick in this entire plot was Danny announcing to suspects that he had kids at home.

I know that it's far too easy to get information on anyone, but why hand the bad guys personal information that they can use against you?

The biggest upside to this entire installment was that there was no sign of the mayor (or the governor) anywhere. Hopefully this will be a trend for 2018.

Finally I'll log the complaint that has come up far too often this season, and that was Jamie only being shown to share a funny story at the Reagan Sunday family dinner. I'm still lobbying for more screen time for my favorite Reagan and his partner.

We'll see if I get my wish next week. Don't forget to check back in for my review of Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 12, and until then, if you want to catch more of the Reagan clan, you can watch Blue Bloods online her at TV Fanatic.

Did Danny and Baez find the person responsible for the disappearance of a journalist?

That was the big question on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 11 when it emerged the journalist had been working on an expose for murder.

Meanwhile, Frank was forced to speak out against a new idea from Erin's office to consider drug abuse as a disease first and a crime second.

Did this create any animosity amongst the team or was everything okay in the end?

Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 12 Review: The Brave

Someone in the Reagan family whom I never expected to be interested in entering the family business decided to do just that on Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 12.

Nicky decided to take the NYPD entrance exam.

Nicky Takes a Big Step - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 12

Admittedly, I never saw that one coming.

Nicky has always been the idealist. The college kid who was both proud of her family in law enforcement but also tried to hide it from her friends, as being a cop wasn't considered cool.

I wish we'd heard a little more from Nicky about why she wanted to join the NYPD other than that she wanted to help people.

Erin: Nicky is not a cop.
Frank: You don’t know that.
Erin: I am very proud to come from a cop family. It defines who I am and what I do. Nicky is not a cop.
Frank: She doesn't get to decide what she wants to do for a living?
Erin: That's not fair.
Frank: But it is the real question here.

I understood why Erin was upset. I'm sure she's pictured her intelligent, well-educated daughter being many things, but a police officer has never really been one of them.

Especially after having lost her brother to the job.

Cops put their lives on the line every day, and as Frank pointed out, mothers are hard-wired to worry about their child's safety. It's perfectly natural for Erin to balk at Nicky wanting to join the NYPD.

Erin Asks For Help - Blue Bloods

And she wasn't about to let her family romanticize their experiences for Nicky...

Erin: Okay, so you guys want to stop sugar coating it now?
Frank: Nobody's sugar coating it.
Erin: Really?
Frank: Yeah.
Erin: Because I don't hear anyone talking about the stinkers and the jumpers, the crack addicts and the child abusers. Not to mention the anti-cop sentiment that is your thank you these days.

But Nicky has grown up hearing both the good and the bad. Wasn't it only last year that a serial killer abducted her? If that didn't scare her off, I'm not sure what will.

Oddly enough it was Frank's pride that was pleasantly surprising.

Yes, all of his sons have joined the NYPD, but I feared he might feel differently about his only granddaughter signing up for the front lines of the family business.

I was thrilled that Frank didn't show a hint of gender bias in his reaction.

If a smart, savvy, young candidate from a long line of dedicated cops wants to take the exam, if I blink at that you should throw me out the door.

Frank

Poor Erin was not only struggling to handle Nicky's desire to consider becoming a cop, but she was also reeling from Anthony getting shot on the job.

I couldn't understand why Anthony's ex blamed Erin for having him go out to interview a witness alone.

Doesn't Anthony usually work alone? He doesn't appear to have a partner.

Also, he wasn't heading out to interview a suspect; he was going to interview a witness, the grandmother of the victim, to make sure she was prepared to testify in court.

It certainly sounded like an easy enough task. But then again, there is no such thing as a genuinely safe assignment when you're a cop.

It was the exchanges between Danny and Anthony that made me smile, though.

Anthony: You think I'm looking for happy endings in a sleazy massage parlor for kicks while I'm on duty?
Danny: That's not what I was saying. I mean, obviously it wasn't a happy ending, look how the hell it turned out for you.

I also had no idea that Anthony not only had an ex-wife but a young daughter.

It was touching when Anthony explained to Erin why he hoped his daughter would grow up to be just like her in this Blue Bloods quote...

Anthony: When Sophia grows up I hope she's just like you, and not because you're a hottie.
Erin: A hottie?
Anthony: Not because you're good looking, but because you're smart, you know what you want, and you know how to go after it. And you're a good mom because you taught Nicky to be the same way.

Anthony's words were what reminded Erin to be there for her daughter to support her when she took the NYPD exam, even if she's probably still scared to death about Nicky becoming a cop.

And finally, we got to see more of Jamie and Eddie, both on and off the job.

Jamie Reagan - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 12

When they first ran into Billy in that bodega, I had little doubt the man would find trouble yet again.

It's entirely possible that the only reason Billy is still alive is that Jamie decided to ignore an order and put himself in harm's way to try and talk the unarmed man out of that patrol car.

It was the right thing to do, but it wasn't surprising that Jamie and Eddie ended up having to pay the consequences for their actions.

Sometimes life just isn't fair, but it could have ended far worse if Jamie hadn't taken the risk.

When Jamie and Eddie were talking about her date's failure to call her back, I was a bit disappointed to hear she was dating at all.

These two have such great chemistry, but they did decide to keep their relationship as partners professional.

But those professional boundaries seemed to be slipping while they flirted over fortune cookies and Eddie admitted to why her date dumped her...

Eddie: Apparently I talk about you too much and it made him feel inferior, I guess.
Jamie: Well, I see how I could make other guys feel inferior.

Eddie Tries to Calm Things Down - Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 12

Just when I think they've pushed this will they/won't they trope too far and I've stopped caring, we get a scene like this and I'm hooked once again.

The tease of an Eddie and Jamie pairing is just killing me. I love them as partners but I'd love to see them as romantic partners as well.

What are the odds we'll get to see both?

So what do you think TV Fanatics? Would you like to see Nicky pursue becoming a cop? Is she cut out for the job?

And who is rooting for some romance for Jamie and Eddie?
