19 TV Shows That Ask... Whodunit?!?

There was a time when you knew what to expect from a procedural TV show. Those times have changed.

While some on this list fit the format that viewers became accustomed to many years ago - regular cast of good guys track the bad guys and solve the case... next episode please - they can now follow a format and tell an overarching story.

From Rookie Blue and Major Crimes to Supernatural and Hannibal, there are unique aspects to all of the best procedural television shows networks offer.

How do we determine the best? We vote on it!

Flip through the slideshow to get a good perspective on what's out there and then hit the poll to vote.

13 Awesome Abbys on TV: And We're Not Even Including Downton!

Have you ever been in front of the TV and thought, "Another one?!

That's the nexus for this post. There has been a dramatic (and comedic) increase of Abbys over the past couple years. In this last season alone there were at least 13 Abby-themed characters on TV - not counting Downton!

What is an Abby? They're normally strong, feisty and - more often than your average bear - they're tasked with saving the world. Really.

The most popular shows are propagating Abbys and an upcoming spring series will deliver a proliferation of terrorizing (strong, yet not saving the world) Abbies to you if you let them. Confusing? Hell yeah! But who ever imagined a cornucopia of Abbies the likes of that we're experiencing now?

Flip through the photos and let us know if we've left out your favorite Abby or we've done them an injustice. It's your world!

Abby Sciuto - NCIS
She's the most beloved character on television. Could her popularity have spawned the excitement over the name? There couldn't be a better Abby model. Life isn't always perfect, you know? But sometimes things would work out for the best if you just had faith."

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 1 Review: Partners

As Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 1 opened with a mentally ill man taunting onlookers and police in Times Square, I kept waiting for them to use the stun gun. However, what happened next wasn't  the way I expected it to go at all.

Very often, police are put in no win situations. If they don't react fast enough and someone gets hurt, they are at fault. If they take action and it goes poorly, they are at fault.  Although Officer McCarthy followed procedure, he failed to address the risk of the oncoming traffic. It was an error in judgment but certainly not a deliberate one.

When the mayor spoke up during that press conference I had to remind myself that this was a TV show. I can't imagine a mayor of a city dumb enough to admit that the city made a mistake and apologize publicly. Every lawyer on the city's payroll would scream that he was handing Stapleton's family the words they would need to win a multi-million dollar lawsuit.

But while the mayor spoke, Frank sat their mute. He later told Erin that it never would have happened a couple of years ago. What's changed?

I loved that Sgt. Gormley stood up to Frank in this Blue Bloods quote

What was missing was you putting it in perspective for the media vultures out there looking for any opportunity to tear down cops.

Sgt. Gormley

In this case, Frank let the mayor bully him into letting his officers down. We've never really seen that happen in the series before and it makes me wonder where we're headed in Blue Bloods season 5

Danny ended up with his own issues as he and Baez took fire while protecting a drug transport. On what other job do you risk your life to try and pay for your kid's braces?

I was surprised by Baez's outburst at Danny afterwards. How long has she been holding back all of that anger and resentment or did she just need someone to blame.

Having her brother take a bullet for her was surprising and heartbreaking. At the end, she basically admitted that Danny was the closest thing to family she had left and one of the few people in the world she knew she could count on.

Jamie was certainly deep in denial when it came to his feelings about his partner. He was hitting that guy during the domestic dispute as though he was in a barroom brawl. Renzulli was right to call him out on it.

As Erin tried to point out, Jamie's feelings for Eddie are obvious to everyone but him…

You have to remember that I was there for your first crush. Theresa Mancini and she was bossy and opinionated and it's kind of your thing.

Erin

The barbs that flew between Jamie and Danny across the Sunday dinner table were great fun. They all acted a bit like 5th graders but then again, that's what siblings do sometimes and as annoying as it can be to be in the middle of, it's an awful lot of fun to watch.

So did Jamie make the right decision about his partner or will it come back to bite him? And has Frank changed the way he does his job since Blue Bloods season 1?

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Forgive and Forget

When Reagan's need help, they always turn to family first and Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 2 was no exception.

When Marcus Greene came to Danny asking for help to prosecute Damon Williams for the death of his daughter, eight years after her shooting, Danny went straight to Erin for help. Unfortunately, he wasn't happy with the result.

Erin reopened the case and interviewed Damon but what she found surprised her. Damon had done his time on the assault charge and had since changed his life. He was employed at a community center working with at-risk youth from the same neighborhood he had come from. He had done everything right but his past sins were coming back to haunt him.

Danny being upset was understandable but I couldn't help but think that he should have had more understanding for the decision not to prosecute. Between the strong possibility of conflicting medical opinions and the fact that Damon appeared to be the perfect picture of a reformed felon, the hopes for getting a conviction were difficult at best.

But Danny was a complete ass towards his sister. Frank tried to have his back by saying that the case was personal but Erin was right when she told him in this Blue Bloods quote

It's always personal for him. That doesn't give him the right to use me as a punching bag every time he doesn't get his way.

Erin

Of course Erin has her own brand Reagan stubbornness. She was more than a little angry with boyfriend Bobby when he was offered the honor of being interim District Attorney. There's a difference between sleeping with the boss and sleeping your way to the top. I'll agree it could make her work life more complicated but I would think that two smart lawyers could get in front of any serious backlash.

Besides, it's really hard not to like Bobby. He seems good for Erin. She could certainly use more of his sense of humor as seen when he asked when he would finally meet her daughter…

Erin: I am having enough trouble trying to control her raging hormones without bringing home stray men.
Bobby: For the record, I've had all my shots, I'm nearly housebroken and I'm just looking for a hot prosecutor to adopt me.

Frank had his issues with an old friend who was months shy of retiring. The accidental shooting story wasn't very compelling, perhaps because it all took place off camera. Scanlon definitely messed up as did his partner who deserved the suspension but I was surprised when Scanlon retired four months shy of a full pension. I would have thought they'd stick him behind a desk and let him ride out the time.

Jamie had the most interesting story of the night as Officer Kara Walsh returned to the precinct. Last season Frank had convinced her to testify against her partner when his actions caused the death of a suspect. Even though the grand jury chose not to indict him, Frank knew enough of the man's history to fire him from the NYPD. Unfortunately for Walsh, all anyone knew or remembered was that she testified against her partner.

The mythical Blue Wall is a scary thing when you're on the outside of it and that's where Jamie found himself when he partnered with Walsh. When the bullets started flying, Eddie and her temporary partner were the only ones to back them up.

What I found most disturbing was how Henry sounded almost proud when he latter said…

Dragging your feet backing up a cheese eater used to happen all the time.

Henry

As though he didn't quite make the connection that this old school practice almost cost his grandson his life.

Everyone was upset and consumed with their own issues during the Reagan family dinner but at least the lasagna sounded delicious.

Danny: Please tell me you're not making your infamous veggie lasagna again.
Erin: Don't worry, after all that whining I went full carnivore. This ham should take three years off your life,

If she had known how Danny would treat her later, she probably would have added more.

What did you think of Danny's behavior towards his sister on this episode of Blue Bloods?

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 3 Review: Burning Bridges

Everyone had their crosses to bear on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 3 as Jamie took on another detective, Danny was faced with homophobia within his squad and Frank had to decide which side he was on.

Danny and Baez ended up with new, temporary partners when Detective Alex Fuentes was outed as a gay man when he stepped in to stop an attack outside of a gay bar. As difficult as it made things with his partner, I think I felt worse for the man because of his family's reaction as his father told him he would never be allowed home again.

As Baez tried to explain to Danny in this Blue Bloods quote...

The culture he's from, I'm from. There is no this day and age when it comes to being gay.

Baez

It's truly sad that some people must choose whether to hide who they really are or risk losing their family and friends.

The homophobic Police Chief in Jersey seemed to make even Detective Demarest's skin crawl. it was little surprise to find out that the man's grown son was the one who killed Martin with the baseball bat because he was gay. Hate breeds hate.

The case managed to get even Frank into hot water as he tried to answer a question about his religion's view on homosexuality. Even a supposedly good Catholic like Frank had to admit that the church was behind the times on this one. Not that Frank regretted what he said, just that he'd said it at all.

The Cardinal came across as nothing more than a weaselly politicial in fancy robes as he pressed Frank to issue and apology and let the fate of a school hang in the balance.

It all made for a great family dinner that kicked off with Henry expressing his own unique opinion about Danny's case...

Anyone who steps into a fight involving two mooks with baseball bats can't be a cissy in my book.

Henry

For Henry, this was to be considered a compliment but I don't think the rest of the table agreed. What was most entertaining was watching everyone's heads go back an forth as though watching a tennis match as Henry and Frank argued the point back and forth.

Finally there was Jamie, who lost a collar to Detective Hoffman while he got his head stitched up. I wondered if Jamie was truly willing to steal one of Hoffman's arrest in retaliation. As Erin pointed out, was it fighting fire with fire or two wrongs don't make a right. In my opinion, it was both.

In the end, Jamie made Hoffman look like the ass that he was and he did it with class and dignity. There aren't many people who can pull that off.

So far, one of the best things about Blue Bloods Season 5 is that the stories are much more balanced. I understand that not every member of the Reagan family can have the spotlight each week but it's great to see Jamie getting more screen time where in the past this felt as though it was becoming the Danny Reagan show. What do you think Blue Bloods fans? Do you agree.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Excessive Force

Danny ended up in hot water once again on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 4 as a suspect screamed police brutality as he fell out of a third story window and broke his leg.

Perhaps fell is a bit of an understatement. The man hurled himself out the window and then told anyone who would listen that Danny threw him...because who would believe that any sane human being would jump. Even Sergeant Gormley gave Danny a hard time when he heard the story.

Speaking of Gormley, I'm not quite sure I understand his new position at 1PP. I agree with Frank that he needs someone willing to tell him the truth and not say what they think he wants to hear but what exactly will Gormley be doing as Special Assistant to the Commissioner? Will it mean he has to give up his precinct because if that's the case he'll probably be miserable.

But back to Danny...I was impressed by Reverend Potter's ability to take a junkie and attempt to make him look like an innocent victim. With Willie's attempt to steal Baez's cash completely left out, Potter turned a smack to the back of the head and a kick in the behind to being beaten over the head and stomped on. Talk about a creative rewrite.

There wasn't much to the Reagan family dinner this week which was a bit of a letdown but I did enjoy Frank's conversations with the Cardinal as he compared one religious man to another in this Blue Bloods quote...

Frank: He is a man of the cloth, like you.
Cardinal: Albeit a sharkskin suit kind of cloth from what I know.

But Frank kept trying to make things work with the Reverend. He took a private meeting on the recommendation of the Cardinal to attempt to build a bridge between their two sides and it failed miserably. All the Reverend cared about was forcing Danny out of the NYPD using any means necessary.

It led Frank right back to the Cardinal where he asked...

Frank: How much mercy am I required to show?
Cardinal: Well there isn't any metric that I know of. You show as much mercy as you can. It's as simple and as complicated as that.

In the end it was old fashioned police work that cleared Danny as they tracked down the one witness who could help. Apparently Potter couldn't offer enough toys to convince Ernesto's family to lie once the NYPD found them. I wish we could have gotten their side of the story. Did they run because they were scared or because Potter had offered to pay them off?

Either way it was fun to hear Frank tell Potter that they asked him to give back his swag.

Eddie and Jamie hit a rocky road when he began dating a beautiful doctor. I bet Eddie was kicking herself for encouraging Jamie to go win points with Dr. Lamb Chop. In the end the two partners were honest, sort of. Neither one of them seems to know what to do about their feelings for the other.

As Jamie said, their relationship is currently undefinable but how long can that last before it blows up in their faces?

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Loose Lips

There was a price to pay for free speech on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 5, especially when what was said ended up on social media. It was a lesson that Nicky and Henry had to learn the hard way.

Henry waxing nostalgic about cracking heads with nightsticks to get results was no surprise. He's always had that attitude about the job and it's not about to change. But the job and the world have changed and as Garrett pointed out, Henry hasn't bothered to keep up.

Henry learned what every cop on the beat now knows, that their every word and every movement is probably being recorded. There is no such thing as privacy any more and a smart cop, or former Police Commissioner needs to realize that what they say and do carries weight, whether they like it or not.

Nicky also got hit with the harsh reality of the new world. It's fun to be able to tweet your opinion to your friends and followers but the reality is that everyone is watching. Whether it be the teacher you can't stand or the college you long to get in to. Once you put something out there, you'll have to live with the consequences.

The one thing I wish we had heard was the second tweet Nicky sent out about her bitchy teacher's comments concerning Henry. It seemed odd that we never got to know what was said, we only heard how it effected Erin's case.

Blue Bloods season 5 appears to be the season of Jamie Reagan and I'm certainly not complaining. It's about time Will Estes got to share more of the spotlight with his costars.

It was not a surprise that Jamie stopped to help Tina as she sat sobbing on that bench but you'd think he'd know better than to turn his back on a jumpy, paranoid assault victim. The moment he stepped away I knew she was going to bolt.

I enjoyed the banter between Eddie and Jamie after he became the next targer for Tina's attacker as in this Blue Bloods quote...

For the record, this whole being partnered with a marked man thing isn't quite living up to the hype.

Eddie

But that was about to change drastically as a masked man threw a molotov cocktail at their patrol car. That'll definitely liven up your day.

I was so happy that Eddie said something about Jamie's loft. That place would cost small fortune in NYC and I know it's only TV but I'd love to hear where in the city it's suppose to be located and exactly how Jamie pays for it on a cop's salary.

As soon as Eddie got in the attacker's face at the precinct it became clear that she would be his next target. I was hoping she'd be able to try and strangle him from behind while he was driving to the garage but I suppose that was too much to ask for. The way it played out, Jamie got to play hero and perhaps we're a step closer to these two changing their professional relationship to a personal one.

I only have one complaint about this season so far. Linda has been relegated to mostly talking about the food and asking Danny questions during the Reagan family dinners. In the past we've seen her at the hospital or at home with Danny. I'm hoping to get more of that going forward.

So what did you think of all the "Loose Lips" on this episode of Blue Bloods?

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 6 Review: Most Wanted

On Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 6 the good guys won, even if they weren't in New York.

When Zorin Brasha bashed in the head of John Coogan over an argument concerning a parking space, he didn't bother to run. Apparently the Albanian criminal with the nickname Teflon actually believed he was...and it was almost the truth.

Danny and Frank took a special interest in the case. Turned out that several years prior, Brasha had a similar argument with an off duty police officer over a drink and slit the man's throat over it. He had managed to get away with that crime but the Reagans were determined to not let that travesty of justice happen again.

I couldn't really blame Coogan for not picking Brasha out of that lineup. When an Albanian terrorist sends you pictures of your niece who lives states away and threatens to send her to you piece by piece, it's hard to stand up and tesitify and simply hope that law enforcement will be there to protect your family.

In the middle of it all, Danny had to deal with a new boss in Lt. Carver and I liked her from the beginning, especially after this Blue Bloods quote...

Your crimes against grammar are the first ones I'm going to fight in this unit.

Lt. Carver

She's tough and put Danny on notice but there's an edge of humor there. Plus she quickly showed Danny she was a cop's cop when she sat down and went over those witness statements with him.

Elsewhere Erin took on Brasha's attorney and her old college rival Tori played by Rebecca Mader who was obviously still channeling her Wicked Witch from her stint last season on Once Upon a Time. It was fun to watch her and Erin reminisce about old times one moment and then go for the jugular in court the next.

Hopefully, seeing Tori as a defense attorney will make Erin reconsider taking the job, no matter what the money involved. As Frank said...

The brass ring in a career isn't the number of zeros on your paycheck. It's when you become indispensable and you are.

Frank

All true, but when you're looking at paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in college tuition, that sentiment is a little harder to hold on to.

I was happy to hear that Nicky was keeping the cost in mind even a little bit when she was making her decsion about which college to choose. Granted it's still the difference between exorbitant and astronomical but still, many kids in her position wouldn't think twice about sticking their parents with the bill if they had the option.

Speaking of which, I'm with Frank when it comes to Nicky's father being an ass. It's not as though Nicky going to college is some sort of surprise. So nice of him to plan ahead to have some money for his daughter's education. Instead he's once again willing to leave the heavy lifting to Erin.

Finally we get to the Battle of the Shields boxing match which we never got to see at all. Not that I cared all that much but it seemed silly to go through the history of the fight between the Reagan and the Wallace families and then never actually show us a fight.

So what do you think TV Fanatics? Did you miss the boxing match and should Erin consider going over to the dark side of the law in Blue Bloods Season 5?

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 7 Review: Shoot the Messenger

Everyone was having relationship challenges on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 7 and it made for one of the more fun Reagan family dinners this season.

Danny's new boss, Lt. Carver wanted to do a ride along with each of her detectives and Danny was being whiny about it. He's so used to doing things his way, from driving the car to taking the lead in interrogation, that the moment he's asked to do things differently he takes offense.

Carver made it clear, she'll support any cop who plays by the rules. That certainly didn't sit well with Danny who would prefer to make his own.

Still the two worked well together on the drive-by shooting case despite their differing styles. I thought that Carver wanting to adopt the child was a bit of an odd ball twist but I'm interested in seeing where that goes. And Danny obviously loves kids so that was a bit of a bond between these two, albeit an unspoken one.

Carver puts Danny on edge but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Much as Frank pointed out in this Blue Bloods quote, she seems tough but fair...

Danny: The only Rottweiler causing me any pain is my new CO.
Frank: Carver's a good cop.
Danny: Carver is a ball buster.
Frank: Carver is a good, tough cop. District Attorney McCoy is a ball buster.

District Attorney McCoy certainly got off on the wrong foot with the Police Commisioner. Garrett was right when he said that interview was an ambush. Erin called McCoy out on acting more like a defense attorney looking for a win than a District Attorney who had to work within the system.

I enjoyed the Reagan family dinner about how order holds people accountable and disorder leads to crime. I understood McCoy's point about being overwhelmed with a "lesser" crime such as smoking pot but then where do you draw the line? Why should some laws be enforced if others are not?

I loved it when Frank called out Nicky at the dinner table and straight out asked her if she smoked pot. I like Nicky but she can be naive and cocky sometimes and even though her answer was no I don't think she expected the direct question at the dinner table.

But the job seems to be weighing heavily on Frank this season. As he half-heartedly conveyed to Garrett, the challenges are no longer exciting him. They're dragging him down.

Finally, Jamie and Eddie investigated a suicide. In a weird way I liked Detective Welby. He was oddly entertaining with his strange statistics and terms such as suicide tourism.  But I can guess why he doesn't do death notifications. I'm guessing his bluntness has gotten him into plenty of trouble with those.

Although the suicide turned homicide was sad, it was Jamie and Eddie's interaction that caught my attention. Eddie doesn't need dating advice from Jamie, she and Jamie need to be dating. Of course that might not happen until one of them moves on to something better, like making detective.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 8 Review: Power of the Press

Members of the Reagan family were willing to go down in flames to fight for a cause on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 8

Danny and Baez tried to protect an informant after the US Marshal's backed out on their deal for WITSEC. Granted, Javier Rojas was no choir boy but that didn't mean his deal for witness protection shouldn't have been honored. He held up his end of the bargain when he testified against Orlando Vega. As Lt. Carver pointed out later, why would anyone ever inform on another criminal if they thought their deals wouldn't be upheld?

Carver's handling of Danny and Baez disobeying orders was somewhat amusing. She could have suspended them, or done something formal that would have ended up on their record and Danny and Baez were willing to face the consequences of their actions as Danny told his partner in this Blue Bloods quote...

We're going down in flames, we might as well finish what we started.

Danny

Instead Carver's punishment felt a little like grounding a couple of unruly children but that might be more effective for someone like Danny.

Frank had his hands full with an incident with a body camera going out in the middle of an altercation with a a police officer. It's always amazing to see the pressure the Police Commisioner is under to make an immediate statement or take a side before all of the facts are in. Thankfully Frank Reagan is good about standing his ground.

Using cameras to watch the police is a double edged sword that was discussed during the Reagan's family dinner...

Nicky: A lot of people don't trust cops. It's a fact.
Henry: Let them try living without us for a week.

Personally, I liked Jamie's line, "Hey perp, say cheese."

Erin had her hands full with Nicky's friend Hannah who was raped by a fellow student...three months ago. Despite believing Hannah's story and finding some evidence, the DA was right. There wasn't enough there to win a case of rape. But knowing that the Dean of Students dismissed the torn, bloody skirt during the school hearing and then withheld it after all evidence was subpoenaed, that was more than enough to build a case against her.

The charges for hindering prosecution or withholding evidence may or may not stick but the public backlash once the story hits the papers may force the University to change the way it deals with sexual assaults involving its students. Or at least one can hope that's how it will work.

I was a little disappointed in Nicky when her take away from all of this was that everyone drinks on campus. I'm not saying that isn't true but no one has to drink or drink excessively and as Erin pointed out to her soon-to-be college age daughter...

The only one who can keep you safe is you.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 9 Review: Under the Gun

Frank let his ego get the better of him, Danny got blindsided and Erin got tough on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 9 but it was Linda's mugging and the aftermath the caught my attention.

I couldn't believe that Linda yelled at her mugger when he wanted her wedding ring. As much as I understood the desire to keep that precise piece of jewelry, I would think that she'd know better than to fight a man with a knife to her throat.

Then there was the fact that no one informed Danny that his wife had been mugged. I can only assume that Linda would tell the officer taking her statement that her husband was a detective. Wouldn't that warrant a phone call to his precinct to give him the news? Not to mention that she's the police commissioner's daughter-in-law!

So I had to cut Danny some slack this time. He really did get blindsided when he came home to find out that his wife was working at a mobile clinic in a dangerous neighborhood and she'd been mugged. Obviously Linda knew Danny would take issue with her work assignment or she would have mentioned it to him previously. Still, Danny could have handled the situation better. Telling his very capable wife that he wouldn't let her work at the clinic was not his finest hour.

Linda used that police commissioner's card to speed up the process to get a gun but I still have trouble believing she could do it that quickly. Getting a gun permit in New York City isn't easy. Getting a carry permit is even more difficult but I'll have to let those details go in order to enjoy this story.

Jamie obviously isn't very good at keeping a secret as he was quick to spill the beans about seeing Linda buying a gun to Erin and Frank. Of course Linda only told him not to mention it to Danny so I suppose he can get off on a technicality. Frank's reaction both surprised and delighted me as he told Erin and Jamie in this Blue Bloods quote

She wasn't kissing another man in the gun store. She wasn't shop lifting a weapon in the gun store. She was buying a weapon legally in the gun store. It's no body's business but her own and whomever she chooses to share it with.

Frank

Jamie's reaction was perfect as he told Frank, "Danny finds out I knew and didn't tell him I'm sending him after you."

I do so love the Reagan family.

Frank had his hands full trying to deal with the fallout of three prominent Jewish men being gunned down in the street. I liked that Erin felt comfortable enough with her father to call him out on thinking like a politician on this one. I was also proud of Frank for finally realizing that he'd let his ego get the better of him.

But it was Danny and Baez's detective work that cracked the case which had to do with a malpractice suit and nothing to do with the victims' religion.

Erin's case was the one for which I felt the least amount of closure. I enjoyed that she asked Detective McBride if he could be a sneaky bastard and help her catch her rat. Apparently Erin's got a sneaky side herself since she was the one who came up with the plan.  Plus Erin was darn tough on Olivia who probably threw away any hope of a legal career when she stole the gun, no matter what the circumstances. Still I half expected more sympathy from Erin. I only wish we had found out if Olivia and her brother both survived the case.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 10 Review: Sins of the Father

On Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 10, Donald DeCarlo got away with murder for almost 40 years until he had the audacity to walk into One Police Plaza for his son's promotion ceremony.

What were the odds that after all of that time anyone would recognize him? Obviously DeCarlo had never met Frank Reagan.

Even Henry wouldn't have recognized the man who killed a cop in front of him after all of that time but Frank had been asking for age progression photos every five years, thus proving the old adage that a winner is someone who simply doesn't quit.

Just like Erin, my stomach sank when Henry began telling his story and getting the details wrong. Perhaps it was to be expected. It had been almost four decades and memories can be fickle things.

What surprised me was even Henry had his doubts and raised them over Sunday dinner. Henry is normally so stubborn that I didn't see that one coming.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Frank asking the son to wear a wire on his own father. On the one hand, he was an NYPD detective helping to catch the killer of an NYPD Officer. On the other hand, this was the man's father! That's a hell of a thing to ask. Whether Frank should have told DeCarlo that his son chose to wear the wire instead of being ordered to do it is also up for debate.

The scene where Danny and Baez got shot at while ordering hot dogs certainly caught my attention, especially when the car hit the vendor. There was so much happening in that first minute that it was hard to keep up.

Danny and Baez had to figure out that they weren't chasing one killer but two. I loved that Danny was able to quote scripture right back to Jerry Phillips. I'm always amazed when people use their religion to validate their despicable acts. Any sympathy that those parents may have garnered over the loss of their daughter was lost due to the viciousness of their crimes.

Jamie's partner Eddie has been slowly becoming one of my favorite characters. First she made me laugh when she yelled out "crazy woman" about the woman in the middle of the road trying to get their attention. Then her response to Jamie in this Blue Bloods quote about the neighborhood being upset about the dangerous traffic situation was priceless…

Well I'm not sure human sacrifice is the way to get speed bumps installed.

Eddie

The detective on this case had a huge chip on her shoulder when it came to both Jamie and Eddie. I agreed with Eddie; Jamie could have done a better job of backing her up. My first thought was they should have looked for traffic camera footage or any other surveillance cameras in that area that could have verified the second driver.

Instead, the dynamic duo did some old-fashioned detective work, but in the end it was a mother with a conscience who decided doing the right thing was the lesson she wanted to teach her son.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 11 Review: Baggage

It was obvious when Danny and Linda walked into that bank at the start of Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 11 that it was about to be robbed because that's what happens whenever two regular characters in a crime procedural enter a bank.

Danny quickly hid his badge and could have grabbed his gun but what good would it have done?  There were five well armed bank robbers up against one cop with a handgun. That was a recipe for disaster only the bank manager wasn't smart enough to see it. I loved it when Linda told him she'd have Danny do something in one and a half years.

I did feel for Angela and her friends. How Capt. Sullivan was being treated, or should I say not being treated by his country should be a crime but as Frank pointed out, robbing a bank shouldn't have been an option. I was proud of Danny for giving Angela every opportunity to turn herself in while still never backing off the investigation. He even made sure that Sullivan got the treatment he needed. Unfortunately he has to endure it alone as his wife is off to prison for five years.

There wasn't nearly enough Jamie and Eddie this week. All we really saw was the two of them searching for a bench so Eddie could eat her cheeseburger(s) and coming upon the abandoned duffel bag.

And before I go any further I need to point out that it appears that CBS swapped the running order of this week's and last week's episodes. Gormley was still being referred to as Sergeant here when we witnessed him being promoted to Lieutenant just last week. I don't know why the swap was made, but that particular continuity issue made it obvious.

Putting that aside, both Gormley and Garrett had valid points to be made. Spanky's silly stunt in the name of art could have easily put lives in danger if someone had panicked believing that it was a real bomb. It was only a matter of time before that type of thing had consequences.

That said, I also agreed with Garrett that in this day and age, calling it terrorism was going overboard and would be perceived as an overreaction.

It's difficult not to like Gormley when he responds with Blue Bloods quotes like this one…

I got a big head but I'm all ears.

Gormley

He was also correct not to let Garrett chastise him into changing his particularly blunt brand of feedback. That's why Frank hired him. He needs someone like Gormley just as much as he needs someone like Garrett. Having two of either of them is a useless form of redundancy.

In the end, it was great to see all the boys at 1PP getting along. But I have one question, does catching the bank robbers mean that Danny can get his mortgage refinanced?

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 12 Review: Home Sweet Home

Frank was laid up, Danny was overworked and Jamie got personally involved in a case on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 12.

I liked how Eddie called out Jamie on getting too emotionally involved in this case since he's given her the same lecture in the past but it must be difficult to look at a 13-year-old kid who has nobody and not feel the need to do something.

The best part of the entire case was probably Jamie's blessing at Sunday dinner in this Blue Bloods quote...

I just want to say how blessed we are to have this food, this house and four generations of Reagans sitting around this table. We should never take that for granted. That's an order.

Jamie

I found it amusing that Jamie told the kid his aunt had been sick. TJ's mother was a junkie. He was living with his aunt who was also a junkie on the street. The kid has probably seen worse than Jamie. There was really no need to sugar coat the truth to that extent.

As much as I enjoyed this story, the ease with which TJ suddenly found a foster home willing to take him in felt a little farfetched. I can't imagine things ever go that easily in real life.

Frank sprained an ankle and ended up spending some quality time at home with Henry. Did Frank have a "put upon" tone as Henry accused. I think so, just a bit and of course Henry would be the most sensitive to it. But it must be frustrating and lonely for Henry being in that house all day long, especially once you've spent years running the police department for one of the largest cities in the world.

Danny and Linda were at one another's throats, even over Sunday dinner. They both had good points to make. In order to pay for Jack's tutor, Danny needed to work crazy amounts of overtime and that must be exhausting. Unfortunately that left Linda feeling even more alone trying to manage the kids and their home, plus her own job.

The conversation Danny had with Frank was both honest and insightful. Danny thought his parent's marriage was perfect. Not even close. It was normal, they just hid the fighting.

She put up with a lot and then I eventually just shut up and listened to her.

Frank

Frank talking about his wife's illness and the importance of family and then Danny seeing that no one was doing much sleeping in that extra apartment the cops kept in the city both sent Danny heading back to Linda to try and make things work. I don't know that long weekends together will solve all of their issues (and I don't know where they'll find the time) but it's a start.

Erin was the one I felt for in this episode. She really likes McCoy but Erin is a straight arrow and she takes her job and her ethics seriously. I'm not sure she can be personally involved with someone who can bend them to this extent.

What do you think TV Fanatics? Is there a future for Erin and McCoy or is this relationship over?

She's the most beloved character on television. Could her popularity have spawned the excitement over the name? There couldn't be a better Abby model. Life isn't always perfect, you know? But sometimes things would work out for the best if you just had faith."

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 13 Review: Love Stories

Erin had to review an old case, Danny and Baez worked a home invasion turned murder and Frank once again had to decide whether to overlook his kid's accomplishments on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 13.

Erin had to look into a 12-year-old case when the son of the woman convicted became an attorney and had it reopened. One of the best parts about this case was how Erin and her investigator Alex interacted. These two have a nice professional chemistry and they are slowly getting to know each other better. Alex doesn't hesitate to tell Erin what he really thinks, as in this case where the original detective did sloppy work.

But Erin was right to berate herself. At the time she didn't question putting a crack-head on the stand as a witness. I was sure Justin won his case with the testimony that the original detective had paid her off to be a witness on six of his cases.

Unfortunately for Justin, his mother was truly guilty. That had to be heartbreaking and I liked how Erin didn't just sympathize with him; she was impressed with the way he handled the case. Perhaps we'll see more of Justin in the future.

Danny's and Baez's case turned out to be a love story gone wrong. What happens when you stop paying attention to your marriage? You call a hit man, or at least that's what happened here. And trying to call it off isn't like canceling your fast food order. So Nicholas took care of things the way he knew how. He shot the man.

The best part about that case was that it gave Danny the kick in the pants he needed to pay more attention to his own marriage. Jack and Charlotte were cute out on the ice, but Danny and Linda were adorable as they shared goofy smiles, memories and candy kisses on the sidelines.

Finally, Frank was once again faced with whether or not to publicly acknowledge his kid's accomplishments when Danny and Baez were recommended for the Medal of Valor.

Being the police commissioner's son is tough. Everyone thinks you get special treatment but that's certainly not the case when you're a Reagan. Personally, I liked Garrett's advice the best as he told Frank in this Blue Bloods quote

Why don't you pretend that Danny's last name isn't Reagan and decide if he deserves a medal based on the merit's of the case.

Garrett

Not to mention Baez. Should she really be penalized because her partner is the commissioner's son? I also agreed with Gormley's belief that the medals aren't just for the cop but for their family, as well.

Sunday dinner was extra special as Danny had on his dress blues and Henry gave a speech that was long overdue.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 14 Review: The Poor Door

I knew that several luxury apartment buildings in New York City had low income housing units within them but I’d never heard of “The Poor Door” until Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 14

Talk about the distinct division between the haves and the have nots. The low income residents weren’t even allowed to enter through the lobby but that didn’t stop Bobby from meeting Rada Radchenko. Little did Baez know how close to the mark her Romeo and Juliet reference would be.

I almost believed Ivan when he said that Diego had earned his respect when he turned down that money, that was until the Russian hitman nodded to him in the lobby. I felt horrible for Rada as she saw that photo. One moment she believed her father was being loving and protective and the next her entire world slipped off its axis as she was confronted with the monster he truly was.

They may not have been able to prosecute Ivan Radchenko but it almost doesn’t matter as he’s now forced to live in a hell of his own making. Would having a poor but honest son-in-law really have been so bad?

Gormley was put in a tight spot when his former partner’s $300,000 Ferrari hit the papers. Weams was so smart about finding schemes to make money but so stupid to call so much attention to it. I suppose that was all ego as he felt that he’d figured out this secret way to get ahead that no one else had. Unfortunately he was cutting corners and evicting real people to do it.

Frank took a hard line with both Weams and Gormley. He even questioned the promotion he’d given Gormley and asked Garrett’s opinion about whether Gormley was up for the job at 1PP. Much to my surprise, Garrett believed he was, although he allowed for some room for error in this Blue Bloods quote

Garrett: I could be wrong.
Frank: Have you ever said that and actually meant it?
Garrett: No.

In the end I wasn’t sure if Frank hoped Gormley would fire the man or show mercy. He was very hard to read.

Jamie and Eddie played everything from Would you rather? - (For the record, I’d lick the tiles in the Lincoln Tunnel before I’d ever touch the water in the Gowanus Canal, never mind go skinny dipping in it!) - to a game of bad cop / worse cop that Jamie took a little too seriously. It almost seemed as though he was channeling older brother Danny for a moment. But Jamie’s empathy eventually shone through as he asked, how much punishment can one man take? Jamie couldn’t help but feel for the dying man who had no one left to call.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 15 Review: Power Players

Frank and the mayor faced off once again, Erin went to Iowa and Eddie and Jamie had a dangerous run in with The Civilian Patrol on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 15

Frank and Mayor Poole have such on oddly contentious relationship. When the mayor asked Frank to look at the big picture, all I could think was that they were looking at two very different pictures, big or not.

The Mayor wanted to save his Deputy Mayor. Frank wanted his officers to get the pension increase they deserved but as Frank pointed out, those two things should not be a part of the same discussion.

As much as I laughed at how Gormley jumped on the quid pro quo bandwagon when he thought it meant an increase in the pension plan, Frank was right. any favor he did for the mayor could easily be used against him as a bargaining chip for more favors in the future. It was a slippery slope and one wrong step was all it would take to slide down.

In the end, Officer Butler turned out to be a decent guy who didn’t want to see someone get jammed up over wearing a Red Sox cap. Although perhaps Ray McClaine needs to grow a thicker skin if be plans on wearing a Boston hat in NYC.

Erin and Alex caught a flight Iowa to try and convince a mob informant to come back and testify. As much as I enjoyed the adventure of this storyline, I kept wishing they’d all stop mentioning Iowa so much. If one person connected to the mob heard that, it wouldn’t take them long to track Vincent down.

Once again, I thought Erin and Alex made a great team. They both fight for justice. They’re both willing to go the extra mile and they work really well together. It makes me wonder if they’d do just as well in a more personal setting.

Finally we get to Jamie and Eddie. It was obvious that over eager Andy was going to get either himself or someone else killed. I enjoyed the bit of debate about Civilian Patrols. Are they truly a double edged sword? Yes, the public becomes invested in their own neighborhood safety but do they mostly attract cop wannabes who couldn’t make the cut and have little to no training?

I didn’t think Eddie was completely wrong when she told off Andy. He was being nice and trying to thank her for saving his life but his life wouldn’t have been in danger to begin with if he had simply listened to what he was told.

Eddie was understandably shaken up after killing the drug dealer who attempted to fire on her and as she explained in this Blue Bloods quote, she found it confusing…

Eddie: This was a really bad guy, so why do I feel so guilty?
Jamie: Because you're a good guy.

And then after days of no sleep and no tears she broke down in Jamie’s arms when she asked for his help. Will this be a turning point in their relationship? They’re great together and as much as I’d like to see them take that step into a romantic relationship, I also like them as partners and the two cannot coincide.

But one of my favorite moments was when Danny referenced the comm-stat numbers and how no matter how bad it seems, the city is safer now than it’s ever been and then the entire family knocked on wood.

Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 16 Review: In the Box

Danny Reagan played hero once again on Blue Bloods Season 5 Episode 16. As much as I like Danny, the Danny saves the day story line feels as though it’s been overdone.

Anthony Drake was clearly not in his right mind. First the man was lamenting that his messy divorce and the restraining order his wife took out against him meant he’d never see his 12-year-old daughter again, then he pulled a gun on a police officer. Well, if there was anyway to make his situation worse, Anthony certainly found it.

Baez tried to keep Anthony calm as they were locked in the interrogation room. The entire SWAT team gathered outside as Danny took charge and In some ways that made sense. Danny already had a rapport with Anthony so perhaps it was better for him to continue to communicate with the man but when Danny promised that they’d bring his daughter to see him I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

Making that promise was a huge risk. Anthony’s ex-wife, Heather knew that he was unstable. That’s why she got the restraining order in the first place. What made Danny think that she’d let her young daughter anywhere near this situation?  I couldn’t blame Heather for refusing to bring Penelope to the station. My own reaction might very well have been the same.

As a mother, Erin was able to convince Heather that bringing Penelope to see her father was the right thing to do, even given the tenuous circumstances. In the end, it was a decision that most certainly saved lives but there were plenty of ways that could have gone horribly wrong.

What I found amusing was that despite more SWAT members than I could count, Danny was the one who ran into the interrogation room and confronted Anthony. That seemed very odd but as I said, Danny Reagan played hero once again.

Elsewhere Eddie raised money for a poor man’s funeral.  I found this entire story line both dull and disheartening. We never actually saw the crime take place so I had little connection to the victim. I suppose it was a story of how one person’s initiative could turn things around but how sad that no one who saw Reginald and Alice every day was willing to help until they felt guilted into it. And the one witness changing his mind and handing Jamie money with his phone number on it felt completely contrived to give this plot a happy ending.

Garrett was in a bad spot. His adult step-son's an addict. He’d been in and out of rehab twice and arrested several times and Garrett was trying to help the only way he knew how. But was he really helping?  I don’t know but I did enjoy the discussions on patenting that it brought out between Garrett, Frank and even Gormley who told Frank in this Blue Bloods quote

Anybody who knows any of your kids, how they turned out, they'd wish they could have talked to you when they were raising their own.

Gormley

But Garrett’s circumstances weren’t Frank’s and everyone’s kids are different. I wonder if we’ll be seeing more of Garrett’s stepson in the future.

In the end, the Reagan family dinner was much too short. I was hoping there would be some discussion about Garrett’s son’s predicament or Eddie’s fundraising efforts. In the end we only got to hear them say grace.

This certainly wasn’t a bad episode but it also wasn’t one of the stronger ones this season.  I hope we get a little less Danny hero worship and more dinner conversation next time around.
