Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 12 Review: Cursed

$

Who would have thought that stalwart, pragmatic Frank Reagan would fear something like a number could be cursed?

But that’s exactly what happened in Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 12

It’s only a number, but these particular five digits, #46808 turned out to be Frank’s late son Joe’s badge number, and it was retired after he was killed in the line of duty.

The odd thing was, that number or others in that vein – such as 468 and 4680 – seemed to have an equally deadly history.

I found it interesting that Frank, of all people, would look into such a thing. He seems like the last person to be superstitious, but perhaps I’m completely wrong about that. As Henry pointed out, he’s carried a lucky silver dollar in his pocket for decades. I suppose everyone has their quirks, I just didn’t expect Frank Reagan to honestly think that a number could be cursed.

That said, he did have a point when even #468 was killed when hit by a bus on his second day on the job. As Frank said in this Blue Bloods quote

Hit by a bus, that's supposed to be, like you know, a metaphor. You actually get hit by a bus it means things are lined up against you.

Frank

Coincidence or curse, Joe Reagan’s shield number will live on as Officer Carpenter honors both he and her late father by wearing it. I loved how the entire Reagan family was able to vote on its fate. Even Danny’s kids, who were probably quite young when Joe was killed, got to be a part of the decision, and I think that says a lot about the closeness of the Reagan family. Every member’s voice is heard.

But the best part, the part that made me laugh, was when Erin asked if Officer Carpenter was cute. When Jamie said she was, Erin concluded that Joe would definitely had said yes to giving her the number. I found that sweet and funny, and an authentic way that a sister would remember her brother.

Elsewhere, Danny and Baez investigated a mob hit in which I never doubted that Ronnie was involved. There was no reason to keep him alive and take the time of putting him in the trunk if he weren’t. I was surprised that Danny and Baez didn’t look at him harder from the start.

Jamie and Renzulli found themselves at a crossroads when Renzulli cut Jamie’s collar loose with no real explanation and then threatened to write Jamie up when he questioned the decision.

I wouldn't have expected Eddie to be the one who wanted to go to Internal Affairs while Jamie pushed to give Renzulli the benefit of the doubt. Renzulli was lucky that Jamie’s loyalty to him was so strong because letting a suspect in a stabbing walk out the door sounds like a heck of a risk, and I would have expected IA to come down hard on him for it.

I’d be curious to find out what happens to Renzulli now, when he comes forward with what he’d done after the fact, but I suppose we’ll never know. What we do know is that Eddie is the best partner Jamie has ever had. How long that will be professional and not personal is anyone’s guess.

Thursdays really had things rolling this week as Heroes limped off for the second time in television history while DC's Legends of Tomorrow roared onto the night with so many quotable moments, making it one of the most purely enjoyable hours on the telly in ages.

That was followed by the triumphant return of The 100 and they are never lacking for witty dialog.

TBS had 25 hours of essentially commercial-free Angie Tribeca to giggle over while Supernatural set the Devil into a new body, but gave Sam the right of first refusal. You can see how well he took that in the quote in this show.

Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 13 Review: Stomping Ground

The past came back to haunt several people in Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 13 and while some will most likely end up in prison, others were banished to Staten Island.

As much as I enjoyed this episode, it felt as though it left several of the stories at loose ends. Take Tim Harrison.

A Night Out - Blue Bloods

Lt. Tim Harrison immediately came across as bitter and resentful. He didn’t like that he was forced to take mandatory retirement. He wasn’t happy about the state of the city and he really didn’t like Frank Reagan.

I found Henry’s Blue Bloods quote to his son very harsh…

I know you don't like the man or care about what happens to him.

Henry

Just because Frank didn’t like the man didn’t mean he didn’t care, and I was surprised that Henry would say such a thing. That Tim was racist was only hinted at until Frank basically came out and said it so that Henry couldn’t shy away from the truth.

And as much as being transferred to Staten Island felt like a punishment, Frank did it because he believed that was where Tim could do the least amount of damage.

Unfortunately, one drunken night on a subway car changed that. Tim was the kind of guy who blamed everyone else for things that went wrong and couldn’t see another point of view if it bit him, yet Henry still tried to support him, even after he showed up at the courthouse with a gun and put Erin in harm’s way.

Even Frank held out one last lifeline, encouraging Tim to take a plea deal. I only wish we found out if he eventually relented and took it or went to trial. I’m truly curious how that all turned out and disappointed we didn’t get to see it.

Elsewhere, Baez came face to face with Octavio Nunez, the man who stomped someone to death right in front of her when she was only 10-years-old. As much as it was great to see Baez confront Nunez and finally come forward as a witness, it left me wanting to know more about her family drama.

Baez sister blamed her for their brother being killed. Did her mother feel the same way? With a reception like that I can understand why she doesn’t drop in more often.

This story presented us with a brief insight into Baez’s family but it left me wanting to know more.

Finally we get to Jamie and Eddie. That training scenario was truly scary. I honestly thought that Jamie had shot that civilian.

Sgt. Ray Langley was definitely walking the line by dating the women he was in charge of training but I was curious to find out if his attitude towards Eddie, or the scores she got in future training changed after she turned him down.

The story never got that far. Eddie was obviously uncomfortable, but I wasn’t thrilled that Jamie felt the need to ride in and play hero. The female officers should have confronted Langley together. Having Jamie do it made it feel he was Charlie and those were his Angels in the tight dresses at the bar.

And having Langley continuously accuse Jamie of having feelings for his partner made me wonder what the focus of this storyline was supposed to be: harassment and inappropriate behavior or Jamie’s growing feeling for his partner.

Despite all of those plot holes, I did enjoy “Stomping Ground.” The characters are just that likable that it's hard not to enjoy an evening with the Reagan family.

Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 14 Review: The Road to Hell

$

0

With Danny and Baez dealing with multiple confessions and Nicky getting a cold dose of reality, Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 14 was easily the best installment so far this season.

As Baez said, Pablo was one of the most unsympathetic murder victims they’d ever dealt with. He conned young women into believing he’d help them find a better life and then forced them into prostitution. I wasn’t feeling particularly sorry for the man who lay with multiple bullet holes in his body either.

Multiple Killers? - Blue Bloods

But that didn’t mean it wasn’t Danny and Baez' job to find the killer, even when all of the prostitutes were raising their hands to take the blame.

The best moment was watching Danny try to talk Martina off of that ledge. I appreciated the continuity when Danny mentioned having watched another man plunge to his death in a similar situation. No matter how tough of a cop Danny is, that type of event must still haunt him. He showed true compassion for Martina and then did everything he could to make certain that Erin gave her the best deal possible.

It’s nice to see Danny play good cop for a change.

At church, Frank had a discussion with Father Quinn about misguided mercy. Was the Father’s desire to help Mason simply enabling his decline. As Sid said in this Blue Bloods quote

If somebody's headed to the bottom they're going to get there no matter how many times you put out a net.

Gormley

But it’s a priest job to show mercy and a cop’s job to arrest criminals and let’s face it, Mason, no matter what the circumstances, had turned into a criminal.

Father Quinn was most likely right about one thing…good intentions most likely pave the roads to both heaven and hell.

Which leads us to Nicky.

I like Nicky but she frequently annoys the heck out of me in a way that only an idealistic college student can. She tries to distance herself from the Reagan name because she doesn’t want to catch flack from her friends for being part of a law enforcement family and yet she’s been loved and protected by that same family her entire life.

I get it; that kind of peer pressure can be very difficult to deal with but Nicky’s not a child any longer and I was a little surprised at how naive she was about the felony drug charges. One of my favorite moments was when Erin decided to put her daughter in holding for the night…

I'll be damned if I'm going to let her sit in the Captain's office sipping hot cocoa while she's being charged with a felony for protecting her friends.

Erin

Erin was right. I believe Frank would have made the same call with one of his kids given similar circumstance. I also think Erin was right when she pointed out to her father that a fifth of tequila and two grams of cocaine are very different indiscretions.

Nicky was more concerned over being seen as a snitch than being angry with a supposed friend for putting her and the others in a position to go to prison for their crime. I really think that despite her reluctance to use the Reagan name, she still believed it would save her. She also seemed shocked to find out that the University suspended her and her friends until the case was resolved. For as smart as Nicky is, it seems she's still very naive about the consequences of the real world.

In the end, it wasn't her last name that saved her as much as savvy advice from a veteran police officer. Frank still stood 500 feet back, as Erin had requested. He just had Lt. Gormley offer the advice instead.

Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 15 Review: Fresh Start

One officer went missing, another was killed and the city’s top cop considered whether or not he still wanted the job on Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 15

Danny and Baez were handed the case of a missing cop and before this I’d never really considered what it meant to not show up for work when you’re a police officer. I suppose you’d risk being fired from any job but where else do they send detectives out to check on your well being.

AWOL - Blue Bloods

Officer Nelson’s wife was surprisingly belligerent. I understood that she was angry with her ex but would it have been so difficult to give the detectives a forwarding address?

I found Danny’s reaction interesting. Did he really think that somehow Reagans were immune to addiction? That seemed naive, especially for a cop who has seen as much as he has. I certainly don’t want any of the Reagans to have to go down the horribly dark road of addiction but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

Erin dealt with the fallout over the failure of the Fresh Start program. It’s hard to say whether the program works or not because as Erin pointed out, we only had this one isolated incident to judge it on.

But I had to laugh when Erin was questioning their suspect about why he was running from the scene of the shooting…

Adrian: I was jogging.
Erin: Jogging? In jeans, a hoodie, and work boots.

Instead of shooting and killing a cop, Adrian had robbed a liquor store. So much for a fresh start.

I also loved watching Erin and Anthony work this case. As much as I miss Alex, Erin’s other investigator, Erin and Anthony are an odd ball pairing that’s very entertaining.

Frank’s confrontations with the mayor were troublesome. It was as though he didn’t want the mayor to ask him to continue on in his job. Or were his feelings hurt that the mayor didn’t seem to want him?

Frank has been wrestling with feeling as though he’s not doing much good in his position but if he steps down as Police Commissioner then what comes next? Corporate security? Non-profit work? Playing cards at home with Henry?

Garrett made a good point in this Blue Bloods quote

You know how you always talk about the greater good. There's not a place out there where you can do greater good than you can from in here.

Garrett

So true and I was glad to finally see Frank and the mayor put their issues to rest. I hope this is the end of Frank considering retirement for the rest of Blue Bloods Season 6.

Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 16 Review: Help Me Help You

Second chances were called into question on Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 16 and their success or failure caused exasperation for many.

Danny’s case was the most questionable from the start.

Head to Head - Blue Bloods

Danny was everything from dismissive to annoyed to openly angry with his wife, and for most of the hour I couldn’t figure out why.

Did he really think she called him and his partner to her place of work just to talk about the kids? Albeit, she could have talked to him over the phone about her friend Laurie’s plight, but perhaps she knew she’d be harder to turn down in person.

Danny wasn’t necessarily wrong about offering Ronnie the benefit of the doubt, but I couldn’t help but feel that Ronnie was a guy who was about to use the “sanctity of marriage” as an excuse to do something stupid to assuage his anger and jealousy. Unfortunately, I was right.

I felt sorry for Laurie’s boyfriend, Paul. How long do you think he was tied up in that warehouse before Danny got there?

As much as I appreciated Danny taking the time to talk Ronnie down, I also wouldn’t have blamed him if he had shot Ronnie either. If Ronnie believed that killing Paul would save his marriage and family, the man had obviously become unhinged.

Danny blowing up at Linda made me feel sorry for them both. I’ll agree that calling Danny four or five times a shift was excessive, but wanting to know the parents of the kids her sons were hanging out with was not. If Linda has been over protective since her shooting, I think she’s earned the right to it.

It was a relief to hear that Danny was equally terrified of losing his wife. She’s lived with knowing that he may not come home from work someday for years. Her shooting has brought that fear home for Danny, and he’s also got to find a way to live with it.

Erin was faced with jeopardizing her career and losing an old friend or doing the right thing to make sure that people in the court system have a real chance to find justice. As Frank pointed out in this Blue Bloods quote

It's hard to do the right thing when you don't know what the right thing to do is.

Frank

But Erin did know, and she was willing to pay the consequences for it. It all worked out in the end but it just as easily could have gone the other wary. I almost wish we could have seen more fallout from Erin’s decision and how she would have handled that.

Frank faced off with City Council Speaker Regina Thomas played by guest star Whoopi Goldberg. I’ve always seen the positive side of the NYPD’s Broken Windows policy, the theory being that if you take care of the small offenses then the bigger ones will be less likely to follow.

Councilwoman Thomas brought a different perspective to it. Does the policy have the police treating ordinary citizens as common criminals? When does enforcing the law border on harassment?

Without knowing the actual specifics, it’s hard to give a definitive answer but I believe that reviewing the policy with fresh eyes and being willing to compromise was probably the best call for everyone.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Regina Thomas back again for a bit more sparring and compromise with Frank. As much as I love Frank and usually agree with him, I don’t think having a smart person with a differing point of view to challenge him is a bad thing. Watching Tom Selleck and Whoopi Goldberg square off is certainly entertaining.

17 Men in Suits Who Make Us Swoon

$

Is it the man who makes the suit or the suit that makes the man? Either way, these characters certainly know how to wear one.

In a world that’s turned towards more casual-wear, there’s still nothing quite like a well dressed man in a suit.

Whether it's their career that dictates the suit or simply their personal choice, it’s clear that not all suits (or the men in them) are created equal.

Check out these 17 fine looking gentlemen who grace our TV screens in impeccable suits that make us swoon.

1. Harvey Specter - Suits

Harvey specter suits
Harvey's first words of advice to protoge, Mike Ross, was to go out and buy some real, well-fitted suits. “People respond to how we're dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do.” Harvey is rarely without his business suits. They are custom tailored three-piece suits, generally pinstripes with flapped pockets, double vents, and wider peak lapels that accentuate those amazing shoulders. Harvey Specter is always handsome but it's his choice in suits that exudes power and confidence.

2. Patrick Jane on The Mentalist

Patrick jane the mentalist
Patrick Jane was rarely seen without his three piece suit over the seven season of The Mentalist. It was his signature look with the vest, no tie and usually in shades of blue. Why? The color blue is believed to convey a warm and trustworthy feeling. Getting people to trust him certainly made it easier for Jane to play his mentalist mind games…it also really brought out his blue eyes!

3. Agent Phil Coulson - Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agent phil coulson agents of shield
It doesn't matter if he's fighting the bad guys from his office or in the jungle, Agent Coulson always wears his suit. The leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. can seem a little uptight but that's because he's a career government man. Coulson likes tradition and consistency. Showrunner Jed Whedon says “No matter what the situation, Coulson feels most at ease when in his suit.” And it shows!

4. Ricky Ricardo - I Love Lucy

Patrick jane the mentalist
In the 1950s, I Love Lucy was the biggest hit on TV and although many watched to see what Lucy wore, it was difficult to miss her handsome husband. Ricky rocked those broad-shouldered suit jackets with a V shape that was close on the hip, had straight fronts, and frequently a TV fold pocket square. The look was popular with the Big Band leaders of the time and rumor has it that many of Ricky's outfits came straight out of actor Desi Arnaz's closet.

5. Derek Morgan – Criminal Minds

Derek morgan criminal minds
Derek Morgan can be sensitive. Derek Morgan can be one badass cop. But as hot as this crime fighter looks in a tight t-shirt and a bullet proof vest, he's even more stunning in a suit. Take a look and just try and tell us we're wrong.

6. Rick Castle - Castle

Rick castle castle
Rick Castle wears a lot of button down shirts and blazers but it's on the rare occasion that we actually see Castle wearing a suit…and that's a darn shame because he is so damn handsome when he's dressed well! The show needs more special events so we can see Castle looking his absolute best more often.

Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 17 Review: Friends in Need

Danny and Jamie almost came to blows over the turducken at the Reagan Sunday family dinner on Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 17

Well, maybe not actual blows, but when Danny put Jamie down for still being in uniform, I was happy Frank was quick to put them in separate corners.

Jamie and Danny Disagree - Blue Bloods

Part of me was incredulous at what Danny said. Does he actually believe that Jamie couldn’t make detective if that’s what he wanted? Then I realized that sometimes siblings say stupid things in the heat of battle and I think that’s all this really was.

Eddie made me laugh when she referred to Marcus as a, “ruff, tough, cream puff.” The guy was ridiculously stupid. When he first refused to wear a bullet proof vest, I didn’t worry about him as much as how guilty Jamie would feel when he got killed. Surely Jamie would have felt it was his fault for not turning him in.

Marcus was young and foolhardy and I think Jamie had a point in this Blue Bloods quote about Danny’s influence…

Your example's made him reckless. He's going to get somebody killed.

Jamie

Because Danny is reckless. Maybe, as a veteran detective, you don’t need to follow every procedure to the letter but as a rookie on the street, those procedures could save your life. That Danny couldn’t admit to that spoke volumes to his arrogance.

But then Danny did a complete turn around as he told Jamie…

You're the best cop I know, alright, and you can teach him things that I can't.

Danny

It was a little like Jekyll and Hyde until you realize that he and Jamie are brothers and sometimes it just works that way.

Erin’s case was mostly dull. The one thing I scoffed at was how hard she came after that widow in their initial interview in front of the woman’s daughter. Did she really expect the woman to respond well to having her late husband accused of fraud?

Obviously it all worked out in the end but the widow coming forward with the box of evidence felt as though it wrapped up the case a little too neatly to be believable.

I enjoyed Frank’s meetings with British law enforcement, mostly because I like guest star Alex Kingston who played Commander Sloane Thompson. I couldn’t really blame her for being blunt about wanting more information and I thought Frank respected her for it, despite his cheeky response…

I can tell you what the Irish in me truly dreads, ultimatums delivered in British accents.

Frank

In the end, I was pleased to see Frank take her up on her offer for a nightcap. Frank deserves a little fun and she’s definitely his equal in many ways. I wouldn’t mind seeing her return for another visit.

Justice became a judgement call on Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 18 as Frank, Jamie and Erin all faced cases that were mired in shades of grey.

Erin’s vision seemed pretty clear, but it was former prosecutor Kathy Elliott’s that was blurred. Did she really believe Jeffery Durning was innocent or was she just blinded by her own spotlight?

Teaming Up - Blue Bloods

Didn’t Mindy say that she went to Kathy after Jeffrey threatened her but Kathy did nothing and yet Kathy acted like she knew nothing about Mindy’s statement? As a prosecutor, you’d think she’d have some clue about how to verify the authenticity of that photo.

I was surprised that Erin was so willing to believe that Kathy simply had the wool pulled over her eyes because she was blinded by ambition after she lied about Jeffrey’s whereabouts and actively hid him from the police in order to get her interview.

The best part about Frank and Nick Constantine was their opening scene during the Offenders Notification Program. Do they really hand out those cards? They reminded me of tarot cards telling someone their fortune. If you continue down this path, you will spend 15 more years in prison.

Or in Nick’s case, it was the rest of his life. Shooting Alex in a room full of people was just stupid and sending bullets flying into the street where a young boy was shot was horribly reckless.

It was nice to see that Frank believed in second chances but unforunately Nick squandered his and he didn’t deserve a third. His own terribly bad choices led to the LIFE card becoming an accurate predictor of his future.

I also appreciated that Frank was respectful that this was still Danny’s case and tried not to step on his toes when he decided to speak with Frank. Father and son worked as a team to crack the case.

Jamie’s dilemma was the most difficult. Yes, it was stolen money but no one would claim it, even after Jamie made all the correct phone calls and notifications.

One of my favorite Blue Bloods quotes was Henry’s response to Jamie…

Jamie: What if I told you I found some of the money?
Harry: I'd say forget the brisket, you're taking us to Peter Luger's for family dinner.

I’ve only had the pleasure of dining at Peter Luger’s once (for those of you outside of the NYC area, it’s an iconic, high-end steakhouse), but I completely agree with Henry because the steak there is amazing!

Seriously though, Henry pointed out, an investigation that was no longer active was not the same as one that was closed. Eddie also pointed out that this could have been some sort of Internal Affairs integrity sting.

Life would be easy if the law always coincided with what felt like the right thing to do. In this case, Jamie put his career and possibly his freedom on the line by arranging for Sandy to find that money that would allow her to continue to care for her grandson.

It was a judgement call. Did he make the right one? I think so, mostly because bending the rules meant he was helping someone in need but I understood why Eddie had a knot in her stomach over the possibility of the consequences. On the other hand, Jamie probably would have lost sleep if he hadn’t let Sandy find the money. I don’t think his conscience would have been completely clear either way.

As Jamie tried to explain why he went to a funeral for a man he’d never met, the Reagans were reminded how blessed they were to be a family…

Danny: Well, the good news is none of us is ever going to end up alone.
Erin: Not while another one of us is still standing.

That’s why we love the Reagans. If you can’t wait for more, you can watch Blue Bloods online here at TV Fanatic.

We all know how important wearing your vest is on the job but Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 19 showed that bullets weren’t the only things that could wound a heart.

As badly as I felt for Baez, the writing was on the wall from the beginning. I hate to be trite but cheaters rarely change and Jimmy Mosey had player written all over him from the moment he showed up.

An Old Love - Blue Bloods

At first I wondered why Danny gave the guy such attitude as it seemed to be a bit much even from Danny but then I realized he recognized him. Mosey was the married man who promised to leave his wife for Baez but of course never did.

I was surprised by how easily Baez started up with her old flame again but I suppose the heart has its own logic and she saw his divorce as a fresh start. In the end, not even taking a bullet could change who he really was. Baez can do better.

Frank had the meatiest story of the week as he tried to handle Thomas Scully’s promotion. I thought the debate was handled well. Should a man be weighed down by one mistake for the rest of his life?

It depends upon the mistake.

Obviously Scully made a real effort to be the best cop he could be and honor the memory of the teenager he killed. Talking openly about the thought processes that led to the killing with new recruits was brave and showed a lot of integrity and personal growth.

Did that mean he deserved the promotion? Maybe, but his efforts did not outweigh the potential downside to the entire department. Frank was put in a no win position in making this decision but I thought he handled it well as he explained in this Blue Bloods quote

I am not going to put the other 35,000 men and women of this department through the ringer for one cop's crusade.

Frank

Scully would be better served leaving the NYPD and Frank gave him several options, some close by and others in large cities further away.

Was it completely fair? No, but a teenager who pulled out his wallet is dead and that’s far from fair either. Some bad decisions can’t be erased by effort or good intentions. Scully will have to live with his.

Jamie and Eddie’s search for the ring uncovered unsurprising results. I suspected it was a scam all along, I’m just happy that the woman that Jamie liked wasn’t the person doing the lying and stealing.

Did you see the promo for Blue Bloods Season 6 Episode 20? It looks like Danny’s case is about to get very personal for the entire Reagan family! Check back for our review and if you can’t wait to see more of the Reagans, you can watch Blue Bloods online here at TV Fanatic.
